    Survival of Original Guns

I have a rifle barrel that I found near an old homestead while deer hunting in the late 1970s. The barrel is so rusted and pitted that you can barely tell it is octagonal. It has the remains of a under rib and you can see the drum location. The tang had been cut and beat smooth and it had been...

    Is this "hawk" ok?

That looks good. I modified my trail hawk in much the same way although I didn't do any work to the head itself. The handle is much too long on these and that paint is tough to get off. I use mine as a camp/hiking tool. If I were to get serious about throwing I'd get a different hawk. Happy...

That's my kind of friend. :hatsoff:

    Black powder life expectancy?

Black powder has a very short shelf life. Probably less than a year. It's also very dangerous to dispose of. Any of ya'll that have "old" powder can send it to me and I'll dispose of it free of charge. :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

Looking at .32 Cherokee or a Crockett?

WOW! I guess I got a real collectors item. LOL! It even has the TC mold handles too. It is a really neat looking little bullet.

Looking at .32 Cherokee or a Crockett?

I have one of the 32 Cherokees. Mine shoots best with the 32 cal maxi-ball. I have an old TC mold for this that I bought 20 years ago. I doubt you could find one anymore.

    Lead melting pot

I've had my Lee production pot for ten years. I've been very happy with it.

    Lead Casting Hazards

According to the MSDS book I should be dead by now and not just by touching lead. :idunno:

    Where to buy musket caps?

I just bought 1000 RWS musket caps from Gamaliel shooting supplies out of Kentucky. The price was good too. I bought them on-line so had to pay the haz-shipping fee.

    Lead Casting Hazards

You need to read the article before condemning it. It was mainly about how to cast safely. I know a lot of people hate Venturino but I've found his advice on casting very helpful. The article was in a magazine I took at the time. I'm old so several years in this instance could mean ten or...

    Lead Casting Hazards

Lots of good info here. Mike Venturino had an interesting article several years ago about not being afraid of lead. He casts mostly in the winter and he lives in Montana (I think). The key seems to be ventilation, ventilation, ventilation. :hatsoff:

    Lead Casting Hazards

I set up two box fans about 5ft apart. One pushing and one pulling. I cast between them. Used to do a similar thing when I welded for a living.

    Lead Casting Hazards

I personally think all the warnings are just hype to get lead banned. I've heard of people getting health issues from casting lead but this was on a large scale. People work with linotype all the time with no ill effects. Basic precautions like good ventilation and wash you hands and clothes...

    Pocket Watches

I have an Elgin circa 1919 railroad watch and it can be tough to find someone with the skill and knowledge to repair and service one correctly the first time. Mine has been to the shop three times in the past two years. I think it's finally running correctly but I guess time will tell.
