    Which 1858 Remington to get

What year is yours from? Is there a known cut-over or were years mixed production?

    Which 1858 Remington to get

    Which 1858 Remington to get

Mine is a '71 date code as well. Unsure of how much the PO shot it, but I've put about 150 rounds through it. Wonder how close ours came off the line? (I've found the Porsches that were made on the other side of my '65 356C coupe, be cool to find a gun sibling)

    Which 1858 Remington to get

Mine is a Lyman imported Uberti from the early 70s. But ... historical correctness aside, if I were to buy again I'd be real tempted for the .36 version w/ adjustable target sights....

Tips from the server room - static

Yup, for a range trip I prefill tubes to make range time easier But seeing the original source I think this is the more important question that y'all have ignored

Help me. I'm moving to Florida. My poor barrels!

N Fla here too Only rust issues for me (modern or muzzle loader) have involved getting rained on or really heavy dew while hunting followed by a bit of laziness/"do it later"-itis

    Do The Math

If we only cared about cost per shot we'd all be shooting rimfire or air rifles. Now if you wanna talk about cap availability vs being able to whack out your own flints (if you live in the right area) and make your own BP, well, OK you have a point.

Need Your Advice on .50 CVA Hawken Load Development Testing

I'll start by saying 3moa is about what I can do with a modern rifle and a 2moa red dot or good irons at 100 yards due to my eyes... so be sure your 100 yard expectations are within your limits - physical, equipment and skill That said, my CVA .54 shot PRB best at 50 yards with milder loads...

    dumb ram rod questions

Thanks, think you mis-understood - I don't need to attach a jag per se, I need to buy one (ok, two), screw it in and then cut rod to appropriate length. The factory rods on my two CVAs had a threaded end at one end w/ the bullet loading/cleaning jag, and the other end was a basic brass cap...

    dumb ram rod questions

Neither of my new-to-me TCs came with ram rods (no complaints, got awesome deal via a buddy for them) Have acquired two of the "universal" fiber glass rods from CVA that are cut-to-length and of the proper diameter to go in the hangers and into the stock channel. Of course, before cutting, I...

SOLD Original Parlor Gun ca. 1870

For the buyer or seller - this looks like an absolutely cool thing and I'd love to see a nice write up or maybe video showing it, firing, etc. at some point in the future!

    Black powder on smokeless ranges

When my buddy breaks out the machine guns we'll intersperse a round or two from a front stuffer using real black just to provide some counter balance Pretty funny that a mag dump and a 54 with 90gr 3f get the same "woah!" reaction from the others on the firing line ...

How do you stabilise your rifle for load testing/sighting in?

Same as I do for my rimfire and centerfire - Caldwell Rock Jr up front and one of a few different bags in back (which bag depends on stock style). See no reason to not use a lead sled or similar if you have one (I do and it is a PITA to shoot from, so it mostly stays home)

Combination Rod Ends/Jegs and Combination Tools, Yea or Nay?

For range use I have a one piece 3/8" brass rod that is tapped for 10-32 stuff at one end and has a nice metal T handle on the other. Use for cleaning, etc. as well. Tackle box full of BP specific shooting supplies - powder, caps, etc. plus a couple of different style worms, jags, brushes...

    Favorite caliber to shoot

I've a "thing" for smaller calibers, so the ML rifle I've always imagine I'd own is a .32 or .36... But my first was a .54, then I bought a .50 and then sold both without ever even shooting the 50, and quickly used the funds to buy a better .50 (went from CVA to TC) and a .45 (again, CVA to...
