Damascus (Twist) Barrels- Who shoots them?

My father told me as a boy, in the 1930s, never to shoot Damascus or twist barrels. As a young man he had been at a gathering where a Damascus barrel blew up. He said he was told that over the years rust had a chance to penetrate the metal strands and weakened the barrel. graybeard

Am I the only one in the Great Lakes Region?

+West coast of Michigan is prime country for hunter, fisherman, shooter. Lots of history. Fairly reasonable gun laws. Michigan may even beat Ohio State this year.

I have a 20-year-old bottle of stuff that makes me wittier than anything else. Doesn't do much for my shooting, though. graybeard

Why are or aren't you an NMLRA member?

Blackjack: right on. As far as profit goes, does anyone think Santa Claus puts up the money for the magazine, or the staff? Be sure and check other sources for the ridiculous laws that are proposed regularly. Any group that opposes that sort of thing needs our support. Numbers count very...

    Leaving Powder in horns

Don't count on replica black powder lasting very long. In my experience it tends to cake up between seasons. Only real black powder seems to last forever in a horn. Graybeard

    NMLRA Renewal

Over the past few years our (NMLRA) numbers have dwindled while a whole lot of people have bought in-lines. Since for the most part the in-liners could have joined NMLRA and didn't I wonder what good it does to invite them. I don't see the in-liners at conservation club ranges or at impromptu...

    Patterns. Long vs. Short barrels???

I spent a lot of time with a 20-gauge tulle replica. I found the 42-inch barrel a pita. Cut it back to 36 imches and it works fine. Mostly hunt grouse in thick cover. As best I could tell, the pattern was just as good with the short barrel.

    43rd Living History show

The Kalamazoo show is a great one. I find it pays to set aside a certain amount of money for books, another allotment for flints, etc. Hard to escape with your household budget recognizable. I'm always tempted to get in the car and drive right to a camping spot, pitch a diamond shelter and...

I shot a deer a few years ago with a T/C Hawken flintlock. Got a rabbit last year with a Tulle flintlock. Is this the place to post? graybeard

    Unpatched round ball

A couple of Civil War historians have mentioned bored union troops at the siege of Petersburg deliberately firing ramrods at Rebel works. They apparently liked the swooshing noise and once in a while hit somebody, according to Catton and others. Graybeard

Kalamazoo Living History show: what is it like?

It's indoors. Great show. Take your daughter. I'd call first, but if you don't reach him, take the gun anyway. Leave your wallet and credit cards home. graybeard
