Brass Butt Plate found in South Africa

The "crows foot" thing is a Broad Arrow designating British government property. Interesting that they would bother to cast it into rifle bullets. The mark on the wall is a bench mark – the Broad Arrow under a horizontal line. The line indicates a point where an exact height above sea level has...

    Wear out a barrel?

Thank you, that's very clear now. I doubt that I will ever need to do this but it's great to know how. I'm always learning stuff on this forum!

    Wear out a barrel?

Thank you, M. DeLand. I'm not quite clear about the casting process. You warm the barrel, then pour molten lead down it, then push the jag into the slug of lead while still molten?

    Wear out a barrel?

Sorry if this is a naive question, but... what's involved to lead lap a barrel?

Where do you store your powder?

Ah. Beg your pardon. The key words being "made for that purpose". Meaning the petrol fumes don't diffuse through it. No, I don't have a motor lawnmower, leaf blower or weed eater. I'll keep my opinion of those things to myself or the moderators will throw me out. Back to black powder.

(Worked it up later with BP, but that's not the point). However it was obvious just by measuring that without some inert filler the ball would...

Where do you store your powder?

That's why it's illegal to store gasoline (petrol) in a plastic container, in the UK. Quite rightly. My petrol is stored in the petrol tank of my car.

    Guns of Tipu Sultan.

This may be of passing interest. Photographed at the Chennai museum. The carriage is of more recent date.

    Two rabbits today.

Just a tiny extra bit of information – the lurcher is so named because it "lurches" – in other words it is notably better at twisting and turning after a hare than a purebred greyhound.

    Denatured alcohol for MAP

Ah. I see. You push the ball down with the jag. Gotcha.

    Denatured alcohol for MAP

I'm sure I'm being very stupid, but I can't quite visualise this. What keeps the wet patch on the loading rod when you pull it out? I'd like to try this.
