    Black powder on smokeless ranges

I do carry a bicyclist's water bottle in the summer so I can quickly hose down a smoldering patch. There's sometimes weeds just in front of the benches, and I don't want to start a fire.

Finally starting my pistol; one more decision

I like both of those stock so much it's hard for me to choose. I think that the contrast between the blue and red of the LM stain might be very striking. It might come down to the furniture for the pistol. How much contrast between the furniture and the stock and barrel. That rust blue is very nice.

Casting Lead balls for the first time _ advice Needed...

The bottom pour ladle from Lyman is a little small. I have one and used it for casting from an electric furnace for many years and it does work well. Waage (two a) makes VERY mice bottom pour ladles in 1# and up capacities that cost only a little more. I highly recommend them...

Casting Lead balls for the first time _ advice Needed...

I've wondered about that as it makes sense that "running ball" back then didn't involve "galena" that was three nine pure. If I broke the last tine from a pewter fork, it would have ended up in the pot. But then what was "pewter" back then? You sure don't want zinc in your pot! Tin good, zinc...

Casting Lead balls for the first time _ advice Needed...

I would certainly break with tradition when it comes to safety gear. Eye, hand and arm protection!! but then, I would probably add 1% tin to get an easier to cast alloy as well

    Looking for chisel recommendations

The little Flexcut "double bevel skew" chisel is a very useful general-purpose tool. Great for cleaning up details and the steel isn't bad at all. It isn't useful for most carving, but beats the exacto knife for sure.

    Fixing Locks

I'm a little balmy on archery and from what I've read, the guild system was very well developed in England even in 1300. I guess the division of labor or specialization explains how well-crafted locks could be made, for a cost that undercut the ability of the colonies and why we imported so many...

    Fixing Locks

Wholly Moses!! I really appreciate these responses. They are amazing details on disaster remediation. But if you pay an educated, trained and experienced smith what its worth to remake these, well you bought the gun three times over. I would guess most of these guns were built to hang on a wall...

    Fixing Locks

Thank you much for the detailed analysis of these issues. If I wanted to buy a Brown Bess replica, whose should I buy? The problems above are really sad.

    Pre ignition

I have not seen this (kaboom from loading directly from horn) happen. In "War on the Run" a book about Roberts Raiders; his journals state that several times he had soldiers sent back to camp seriously injured from powder horn explosions. Now those guys were the original he-men in pitched...
