    Carrying Shot

I carry five pre-measured shot/powder charges in plastic film cannisters taped back to back. Not traditionalbut it works. I have never shot off all five in a days hunting rabbits. I hunt with a T/C New Englander 12g single shot and you may wish to carry more if you are shooting a S/S. I also...

    .50 cal t/c Hawken

I have the same rifle, T/C Hawken .50 flintlock, and have limited my self to 75 yards as that is the limit of my peronal ability to hit the chest cavity of a deer. I am sure that a .50 cal rifle would be effective at longer range but not with my eyes. My load is 65 grn 3F +.018 pre lubed patch

    Double flint folwer

I saw a S/S 20g flintlock advertised on the Candian website "Canadian Gunutz" for $1,000 CAD. I sent the seller an email and he told me that he had purchased a few of them from someone in the USA but did not tell me where. He did have to tune the locks and he said that they were made in India. AB

    cold weather lube

-23 is a little ugly and below my personal level of comfort. I checked all three patches at 10:15 and the were still pliable and had not frozen up. at 11:15 it had warmed up a little and all three patches were still doing their job so I left them out for another hour. At 12:15 it had warmed...

    .45 round ball for deer

I just ordered a rifle from TVM in .45 because it is my favourite caliber. However you do have to respect it's limitations which for my skill level is 60 yards on deer. Last year I passed up a broadside shot at 75 paces on a very nice 4x4 whitetail. I thought that it was just too far for the...

    cold weather lube

Hi folks It is 9:15 Calgary time and -15 below. I just put out three patches on my deck railing with different lubes. One with Hoppes No9, one with Olive Oil and one with a moosemilk mixture that I use in my smoothbore (water, Hoppes No9 and ISP) I'll check these patches again in two hours and...

    Waterfowl with a smoothbore

Hi Steve There is a guy in Alberta who says that he is going to start manufacturing Bismuth shot. Me and my buddies are in contact with him and will post his contact information if he gets into production. He is thinking that it might cost $140 CAD per 7 lb bottle and he is thinking of starting...

    First Flintlock suggestion

Another vote for the Pedersoli Frontier. I have had two and they both worked well. I am not sure what they cost in the USA but in Canada they are expensive enough to make it worthwhile to consider a TVM rifle for a little more money. r

    single shot vs double

Hi folks I have a single shot New Englander 12 gauge that will probably work just fine for my hunting (ruffed grouse, ducks, and pheasant) if I pick my shots.I have not had a chance to work with it yet. I have been offered an nearly new navy Arms S/S 12 gauge at a decent price and was wondering...

    Non-traditional powder measures

I use .45-70 cases for powder measures in some of my guns and they hold 70 grains of 2F. I weighed five charges from each case to double check. AB
