They copied and influenced each other.
For example, John Phillip Beck. The Laucks (SW Virginia) had a link to Beck. Beck's wife was a Lauk.
Bulls, Beans and Tennessee Rifles......
John Valentine Bull apprenticed up north possibly with Beck. John Bulls early rifles have the same profile as a Beck rifle. Of course, the early Bulls will be slimmer and have the features common to the region, but the stock profile is uncanny.
You can take a Beck tracing and set a john Bull rifle in it, and it fits. The comb-line and overall shape match.
The English copied American Rifles for the skin trade. The Indians like them so American makers copied these English copies of American rifles for the same trade.
It's really a fascinating study. Rather than linier, the development of American Rifles much like a spiderweb. Back and forth and crossing to and fro....

The master they were apprenticed to.
Those two common sense fact bites shall be lost and wasted unfortunately....

That link was great and very entertaining. It was also much cheaper than doing it myself! The advantage of living vicariously through the deeds of others is a sure sign of wisdom.

The border carving where you stabbed in with a gouge is a great idea for those of us with limited ability. I don’t understand the need for pink underwear but I will see if it helps my carving.

I had a friend who build the knife and rifle below but he was anything but personable, to say he did not suffer fools lightly would be an understatement.

Can someone tell me what "same-oh, same-oh...." is? 🙄
I would venture to guess that it's how it was mistakenly heard when someone was told Same Old about something.

Like, in the songs:
Creedence: There's a bathroom on the right.
Jimi: Excuse me while I kiss this guy.

Sometimes the mis-heard word is funnier than the original! :ghostly:

Just tried to help the OP out and all you girls get your panties in a wad. There was not anything offensive in my original post. How typical. I have no idea what your issues are, but this place is so predictable it's boring. Obviously, I have nothing to offer here as any advice is cast aside immediately for some odd reason. You little girls can flop around and figure this stuff for yourselves and ignore 43 years of experience from a fulltime muzzleloading gunmaker. You bore me beyond belief. In fact, internet forums suck. 🥱
You are right. Maybe you should just delete your account here and move on.

I am a very experienced bow maker, my bows have won over a dozen national championships, I like to help people out in their bow making journey. Like Mike, I was attacked by the peanut gallery if I pointed out a major flaw in a bow someone just made. Vicious stuff like "he will probably never make another bow after your criticism".

So, after a constant barrage of this for a year or so, I finally asked them, "do you want an attaboy for doing a bad job or the truth", they thought about it and decided the truth would help them make much better bows than an attaboy.

What do you guys want, the truth or an attaboy?
I’d say give us the truth without being an a$$ about it.

The master they were apprenticed to.
this is understood but the master had to learn also, Things start out with an individual and a set of skills, those skills are used to achieve an ideal, the end result is a finished product, Sure the different schools, styles and old makers are worth emulating, but what about the now builder who is building himself a gun, are they wrong in their quest, deserving of ridicule and basically trashed on the build at times, if they are a bit free in the build, without a look beyond what is established either past or present there is no progress so to speak. Never been big on holier than thou monikers, did the old builders consider themselves as masters or just rifle builders. Just as today there are builders, some better than others but not masters.

I disagree. He has a ton of expertise that some of us benefit from. This is just a hobby for me in retirement. I have gotten quite a few tidbits. He also has a ton of credibility that most do not.
Fortunately for me I find his replies rather entertaining, but I am sure others do also.
This forum will suffer if he decides to leave.
We also have one far more abrasive that has little skill. We put up with him and find him somewhat entertaining once we accept the childish nonsensical responses.

I understand that Uncle Evil’s expertise can give more weight to his terse prose, but even if you do not find it entertaining as I do it is still worth taking heed.

Sure, try to drive away one of the last true builders offering free advice. If we lose them all, what good will this site be?
If you drive away all the new members who get little else but negative criticism from a few certain members that post little else but, then this site would cease to exist, because there would be no new threads and no new posts from those new members looking for answers to their questions and problems, and then it wouldn't be good for anything at all, except for for those members whose endless disagreements and arguments over picayune esoteric details that are utterly worthless to those new members just looking for basic knowledge.
