Unfired CVA 12ga SxS

Hi all.
I have recently purchased an unfired CVA (Dikar) 12ga double shotgun.
I also have a Traditions (Ardesa)Fowler but was in need of a second pew.

I am very excited.... long time awaiting to get a good affordable double shotgun.

For good reason! Bud has one and it's a fine performer. He sezz if it ever comes down to getting rid of guns (he has lots including some fine ones), the CVA will be the last to go.

Congratulations on the new toy. Mine has always done the job. My one claim to hunting fame was on a game ranch. They assured me I would get at least five shots at birds. That CVA brought down all five.

Haven't used mine in some years. Time to dust it off and do some trap shooting this autumn.

I rebuilt a kit version that I got a few years ago.

One of the things I thought needed improvement was the kit lacked a butt plate so while I was rebuilding it, I bought a English style butt plate from Track of the Wolf.

I removed the hook at the top so it basically ended up having a flat surface to mate with the stock.
I forgot if the steel butt plate is wider than the CVA stock but if it is and if you decide to install it, the outside of it could be filed down to match the stock on your gun.
If it is narrower, the only way to install it would be to strip the butt on your gun and sand it down to match. That would probably cause you problems matching the color and protecting the checkering.

I also felt the barrel needed a better locator where it mates with the stock.
As it is, mine was just a very loose pocket in the wood that didn't position the barrel, side to side, very well.

Really nice. I see another CVA shotgun on Gunbrokers, appears a little more used than yours. Any thoughts on what would be a fair price for one?

In the nineties, I also had a two-barreled shotgun equal to that, as they were made in Spain, but now I prefer those of a single barrel, in percussion or flintlock, and with a longer 32 inch barrel. Saludos.

So THAT'S what they look like new! Beautiful. I have a well used CVA with 13 1/2" tubes. I got it that way and I'm still a bit mystified why someone went that half inch. I added musket cap nipples as it saw a lot of reenacting use. It's lethal close in with 80gr OO-buck loads. It got 100gr blank loads for reenacting. I was in a Reb Provost unit and it was perfect for prisoner escort or payroll guard detail. Ugly but intimidating.

Nice looking gun. I have a couple double barrel Pedersoli's in 12 bore. I have a blast every fall walking the woods chasing squirrels. Something about the feel of a good double gun in your hands just brings a smile to your face.

Nice find! For a while those CVA doubles were an easy find..........not so any more, with the price of Pedersoli guns on the steep rise is also bringing the CVA guns also.
As Zoni mentioned about installing a butt plate, I would not be comfortable, resting the bare wood on the damp ground while reloading, or just leaning against a tree.
I know the stock is sealed with varathane, oil, or some other material, but the butt of the shotgun is end of grain, and even the best of times problems will occur.

I am trying hard to domesticate a stubborn 45/70 IAB sharps rifle which takes all my shooting time, and lots of petrol, lead and black stuff...by now

I got one as a kit from a guy who had no idea how to build it. I too added a butt plate. I also added a ramrod entry pipe since my kit didn't have one and did a little checkering. It has never shot very well though and seems to have weak main springs. I also had to do some fiddling with the triggers to get them to work.

I've got that same gun but mine is a sxs. 54 cal express rifle. I've had my rifle since the late 80s and it's a great shooter. This is the first I've seen like it in years.

I cant ever find mzldrs in sxs shotguns. I even search for them but non to be found.
