Hi all,

I just wanted to throw out the topic of being “younger” and turning into an all traditional hunter. I see so much content everywhere of guys shooting animals with high technology bows, guns, rifles, etc...I think what hunting traditionally means to me is different then what some of other peoples thoughts are.

Example I really want to duck and goose hunt with a perc. Dbl barrel this year but everyone I talk to says it’s stupid and I shouldn’t do it if I want to shoot limits...how do some of you go about telling the nay sayers that this is something that I want to do and this is the way I want to hunt? I appreciate the advice and sorry if the question or statement I am asking is unclear.

Eric

First , great that you are willing to hunt with Traditional type arms , shows that you hunt for sport . We all hunt for different reasons ,and realize that some people will never understand that just filling tags or limits is what all hunters should do or want . In my eyes hunting is a very personal thing how you conduct yourself on a hunt , respecting the game , land and other hunters is what is important . Having spent most of my life hunting on and running a large Texas hunting ranch I have seen many different type of hunters from the best to the worst , and must say this Not All but most hunters that show up for a hunt with a muzzleloading sidelock rifle or shotgun have been some of the best sportsman I have had the pleasure to meet and hunt with. Good luck hunting . RW

People who are unwilling to learn something new will be unpersuaded by any proof or argument. People who are willing to talk to you reasonably might by just pointing out the facts.
Ml fall way short of modren guns in preformince in general. The place they don’t is handguns and shot guns. Some ml hand guns have at 12.5 yards all the energy and stopping power of modren self defense arms.
Shot from an ml preforms about side by side with modren guns. Yes you will only have two shots, however those two shots will be as good as two shots from a similar choked side by side modren guns.
Take those who are willing to learn to a shot gun range you will shoot the same score with a tradition side by side as a modren side by side.
Those that are unwilling to learn all you can do is laugh right back at them and give them a Bronx cheer

I've always hunted traditional when others around me didn't. Bow hunting I used a recurve and everyone else used compound. Deer, squirrel, rabbit, grouse, etc. all used a muzzleloader...Especially when I hunted with friends.....I really enjoyed the look on their faces when I would bag game....Shuts them right up.

Walk your own walk in life, hunt your own hunt.

The answer is really simple. Just ignore them! :rotf:

The ones who stick around are your real friends, and your efforts might even spur them to join you. The ones who just can't let it drop never were your friends, and they've made it clear you can't be friends unless you do things THEIR way.

Pretty grim existence if you ask me, and one I gave up before I graduated from high school 50 years ago. It can get a little lonely at times, but in fact I enjoy the peace and quiet lots more than I enjoy their "company."

Eric, glad to hear that you are thinking as you are.

Spence once wrote here that an angler which catches a big fish never walks home through an alley.

Follow your traditional yearnings, and you like the successful angler, will never carry your take, home through a dark alleyway.

Regarding the naysayers.....are you familiar with the term "inferiority complex"?

March to your own drum, like many here. Enjoy the journey while others just find a quick, easy way to a destination.

Best regards, Skychief (Dr. of Philosophy) :hatsoff:

It is not stupid to want to chase your aspirations, and with practice you can get your limits. im a guy who used to shoot modern bows modern guns, as ive aged ive progressed to more traditional means. why? the challenge the nostalgia the learning curve. don't ever let anyone discourage you from what you want to do. run with it, then when you are getting your limits what can they say?

I am a retired PH (25 yrs) and I have been all over the world and seen all kinds of hunting implements. I am in the US now (and still serve in the Guard) and hunt purely traditional. You have made a great choice. You will get more satisfaction out of your hunts and you will learn more about hunting. When long-range shooting (at animals) became a phenomenon several years ago I had clients ask me to back them up further from the animal after I worked hard to get them close! If you want to prove you can shoot long range, show me a consistent small group on paper. The clients had so much advanced equipment that it didn't make them a hunter or shooter (marksman). I use a 19 gauge SxS shotgun for about everything small or winged. The ballistics are identical to a modern 2.75" 20b cartridge. You're gonna load a little slower. An accurate rifle will get you a good shot on game. If you do your part a second shot will be a rarity. If needed, you will take a bit longer to reload but if an animal is terminal it is not likely to move much from where it is. If it is out of sight, you have to go look for it anyway so you have time to reload.

Most people that are disinterested are deaf to anything you say to justify your equipment for hunting. Some may be acceptant if you explain the ballistics and they can relate. Once in a while someone will have genuine interest and you will gain an admirer (supporter - can't think of the right word here).

Proof is in the puddin'. Show them your proficiency and success over time and they will stop the nay-saying and either keep quiet or be inquisitive and positive.

Who you callin a NERD? :cursing:

Ya know dang well I'm an ADDICT. Its a disease, really, just ask our wives :blah:

Just hunt how ya want my friend. Like Brown Bear says huntin alone has its benifits. When Im alone in my duck blind I dont miss all the cussin about sitting down quick while reloading :haha:

I have a "trophy" deer hunt comin up and will shoot either my .54 or .58 Cabelas Hawkin. A business accoiate also drew one of the 25 tags and he is not a BP addict. Being very well off he ordered a $10K rifle/scope kit. My prayer (other than meat, I'm a meat hunter) is that I shoot a bigger deer with my $300.00 Cabalas rifle than he does with his $10K rifle.

A guy with a $10K rifle is not likely to "addicted". He will likely shoot this gun less than 50 times in his life :shake:

In the whole worldly scheme of things, the importance of killing a "limit" is just not that big a deal.

But, how you try to do it and who you do it with is immensely important and will become a part of you for life.

I think he was talking about me.....I'll wear it like a badge of honor.

Hunting by traditional means, will bring you joy that you will cherish for a lifetime.

My favorite is squirrel hunting with a muzzleloader.....Every step I take as I walk though a squirrel woods with a muzzleloader in hand is both a dream and a fantasy...You just don't get that with a .22lr.

I have this badge.
24 when I got a 45 rifle.
Some thought it hilarious....until I started not missing with it!
I use modern stuff but my heart is happiest with a traditional gun.

Strawberry/Rhubarb please :)

Would love to do traditional as well. But keep in mine for duck and goose dont you have to use steel shot by law? If you have old Damascus double barrels like I do, I don't think they like steel shot. Others can chime in. I think traditional is the way to go for pretty much everything of late.

I have two shotguns. One is a modern replica and has chrome lined barrels. I use steel shot with no issues. The other is much older original. In this case I use Bismuth. Bismuth is getting hard to come by and is expensive so I choose this shotgun where I am likely to shoot less, ie: upland or woodduck only hunt where the limit is 2.
