Unless I've missed them, or simply forgotten, have any of us posted about hunts for elk, moose, bear, or caribou here?

If not, I wonder why not?

I shot some roundball through my fowler this evening and had the thought that if these were found in Indiana, I would love to give them a try with said gun.

Surely some of us hunt these game animals. :idunno:

Best regards, Skychief

I quit before I got into muzzleloading rifles. The kids grew up and left home almost 30 years ago, and took with them the need for us to have lots of meat in the freezer. Now my wife and I are doing good to eat 2 Sitka blacktails a year. I just can't bring myself to shoot larger animals, then give away most of the meat.

I got to fat and lazy to carry deer out.
Last one I did someone had wounded so it was for mercy.
If some of our smaller species turn up I maybe tempted.

There is a section of the forum called the "Hunting Journal" http://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/fusionbb/showforum.php?fid/134/
It has been bastardized by the new owner,, as he now allows others to comment,,,
,,the very intent of the section was for sharing,, not another opportunity for one-up or critique.
,, the section was meant as an opportunity to tell the story of the hunt as the individual experienced it.
Go to the linked page, scroll to the bottom and enter "all dates" and read.

Elk and moose yes, as we seem to still feed the kids even though they have families of their own!
Never wanted to hunt a bear, and it'd hav eto get a bit colder before caribou turn up this far south...

Have to check on my draws....

I've killed 3 of the 4 but, unfortunately, I used a rifle not suitable for discussion here.

Caribou haven't made it to Florida yet.

I've hunted Elk & Bear with a muzzleloader - neither were particularly cooperative on the days I went...

I've hunted only elk and the first hunt in 1986 was w/ an outfitter in Montana and was a "Hollywood production"....only the guides saw elk.

But elk hunting became a passion and in 1987 we got MLer any sex elk tags for the unit in CO and w/ a complete camp setup including a 12'x 14' walled tent w/ a large tarp and 2 satellite tents, we started our hunt.

All I can say is that this first elk trip was a learning experience not to be forgotten. My son and a buddy posed problems that made me think I was an ambulance driver. My son had an impacted wisdom tooth that should have been pulled before the trip and my buddy had extreme pain below his right shoulder....he said it was bursitis which turned out to be cancer and the MD prescribed a strong painkiller.

The dentist who attended to my son refused to pull the tooth because of the swelling due to the infection, prescribed Percodan which is a very strong opiate.

These events occurred during the few days before the hunt and both my son and buddy were "zombie like" due to the meds.

We started the hunt very early opening day and my buddy didn't stray far from the camp and my son who was "high" on Percodan missed a nice bull.

Although no elk were shot during this "trip", many things were learned...like being in shape for the altitude of 10,00o and up, elk , unlike deer herd up very tightly and it's either feast or famine and a lot of ground has to covered.

We went elk hunting w/ MLers, CFs and archery in this same area of CO for many years and had pretty good success....the meat pole was filled a couple of times.

Found that my .54 Hawken could kill elk w/ a PRB just as well as a CF and the last elk was shot at a durance of 107 yds. and went 40 yds after the shot and collapsed.

Not enough space for many of the details except to say that each elk hunt was never to be forgotten......Fred

Came through the chemo and radiation just fine and sometime later on died of old age.....Fred

I've posted a few elk hunts. Two bulls with a .54 lead ball. Never had the opportunity to hunt the others. My dream is to hunt Moose and Bison with a Flintlock. After building my new .62 fowler, me thinks that would be the ticket! Although I also have a desire to build a "transitional" Style rifle in .58 so we will see which it is when the time comes!

And I am confident the time will come!!

First Bull in 2006 If I remember which lie I posted, Shot at about 40 yds, Down like a Sack of potatoes! We had to fish him out of a pond, figured he would run out when shot.

Second Bull in 2010 Shot at 10 yards (ish) Down Like a Sack of Potatoes!

Funny how the distances either shrink or grow in your mind! :v
