Well the birthing time is in full swing. Over the weekend, I saw a fawn that was (based on size and curiosity about me) not more than about a week old, and the following day I saw a fawn that had to be born the evening before (based on the size and steadiness on it's legs). The first one was quite curious about me, actually trotting toward me to get a better look at me as I hiked down the local "bike/hiking path". In the past couple of weeks I've seen several very small fawns in different meadow areas.
THEN today on my way to work, by the time I got to one of the major intersections..., traffic is backed up, so,..., I took a quick left to take a short-cut through a neighborhood that 's adjacent to parkland. Lo and behold, this huge black bird is crossing the street about half a block in front of me so I slow down, and it's the wrong shape for a buzzard. It was also directly East, so there was some sun in my eyes...,
..., so the bird does a U-turn, and heads back into the landscaping on my left...and as I drive past, she's still there. SHE? Yep, a hen turkey and six little, turklets..., (is that what they're called ??
) ... turkey chicks..., and of course I gave her a little "gobble" as I slowly drove past. :haha: She and the whole brood stopped and looked over their shoulders at me...,
So, the past few days have been very encouraging regarding "game" for the coming years. Turkey, especially, have been rather scarce in my general area for a while.
