Has anyone hunted in Greenland? If so, how did you arrange getting powder? In my case, I use Hodgdon Triple 7 Magnum pellets .50 cal / 60gr. Any leads would be greatly appreciated.
 
Since it's Triple 7 and not real BP, you have the option to go through UPS or Fedex with a HAZMAT fee and just ship what you buy well in advance to the location or outfitter you'll be staying with.
 
Why not ask the Outfitter? He would know the protocol since he lives there.
 
On a hunt with Icelandic Hunt Club for Reindeer, we had to apply and pay for a firearms license even for the traditional ML's. The outfitter was able to provide one canister of powder and it was not specifically what was requested but rather what was available. She had some trouble getting it even with several months notice and it was down to the last second that it actually came to fruition. I think it was also $108US for the pound. Nobody in the group used pellets so I cannot comment on that. This was many years ago before TV made this location more popular, so it may be a more straightforward process. Once again, the outfitter took care of the acquisition. Interestingly, the staff was quite familiar with ML's and very interested.
 
A cautionary tale about packing BP into "spare" ammo:
Back in the late 1970's when I was in Rhodesia we had a fellow from California show up to do some plains game hunting with a Sharps 45/90 BPCR and a beautiful hand crafted Colonial Williamsburg flintlock. He had brought extra 45/90 rounds specifically loaded with powder for the flintlock to allow him to get the BP in country without the issues of trying to carry (or acquire locally) loose blackpowder.
Unfortunately, due to reasons we never totally understood...none of the powder pre-loaded into the brass cases proved to be of much use. All he got was a weak "pfffttt", instead of a detonation when he tried touching off some shots before heading into the bush. :redface:
He wound up borrowing a rifle to do his hunting with so all was not lost...but it was a shame to not be able to use those fine rifles he had specifically acquired for the hunt. A lot of flights with dramatic temperature changes, poorly constructed ammunition..?? :idunno: We never knew what happened.
 
That Strange? I wonder what could have gone wrong?

I make them up in 20 gauge hulls that way I have shot, felt wads and powder for my fowler when I travel for turkeys. I leave the spent primers and mark them with a sharpie.

They always work for me.

I have some that have bounced around in my shooting box for years and when I use them they always go bang.
 
I've heard helium. If you dive to great depths or fly to high altitudes and happen to be a horologist, you know what a helium escape valve is. How this degrades the powder I do not know specifically. I know the theory and mechanics behind horological helium escape valves, but I do not know about it in relation to other situations.

The most likely reason for the 'pffft' was probably moisture. It may have been damp black powder when he loaded the cartridges or condensation in an un-pressurized cargo hold. Either way it would seem to boil down to poor loading technique.
 
Not a wise suggestion to sneak anything through airport security. Looked into this years ago before a trip to Africa. Heard horror stories. Told of TSA looking for BP when checking muzzloaders through security. Although I did not take my muzzleloaders when I went, plan was to have documentation that I was getting my powder locally after final destination arrival. Don’t want to get caught with an explosive or what could be considered an explosive at the airport. Will ruin your day.

Would apply the same caution with your 777. Talk to your outfitter about how to get what you need at your final distination.
