It was considered very unhealthy to not have a hat or a neck scarf on. Men working in mines or out to sea may strip off a shirt, but covered their heads and kept a neckcloth on.

Wasn’t it considered indecent to appear in public un groomed back in the day?

In the 18th century, some few men had mustaches and/or beards, but generally it was considered "civilized" to be clean shaven. However, their definition of "clean shaven" was often shaving only twice a week and one of the times on Saturday or Sunday morning to go to church.

Men who could afford wigs often shaved their heads or cut their hair very short. However, by the time of the AWI, wearing one's one hair coiffed like a wig and sometimes powdered, was coming into vogue. The average guy wore his hair close to the style of a wig or at the least the ends of his hair in a sort of que or gathered and tied.

However for the upper classes who shaved their heads for a wig or cut their hair very close, a turban was probably more common at home or when not wearing a wig, than what we call a "Do" Rag.

Back to the mysterious turbans, eh Gus? I've never tried to tie one.

With having to keep my hair short on active duty for many years while reenacting, I found some types of period head gear just looked stupid on me. For instance, I LIKED a period slouch hat for doing WBTS, but a Kepi looked much, Much better on me.

An 18th century Round Hat or a Military Bonnet looked good, but a cocked hat was obviously never meant to be worn with really short hair!

A Turban? Gosh, that would have looked absolutely ridiculous on me even IF I had someone to show me how to wear it.
