Pay careful attention to the gussets - they are essential for a proper fit.

yup, first time I made a shirt the neck was too wide, still comfy but needed to take it in.

Gather/pleat the extra width into the collar. This allows the shirt body to be loose (as it should be) and yet fit properly at the neck. The way that works for me is to make the collar the necessary length, find the center and tack it to the neck opening at the center back, also tacking at the neck gussets/shoulder seams and the front edges of the collar then pleating the material as neatly as possible with the smallest pleats manageable, capturing all the pleated material between the two edges of the collar and sewing everything together. I find that most of the pleats happen closer to the center back and between the collar front edges and the neck gusset (more towards the chest slit than the shoulder).

Do you have any trouble with your linen thread breaking while sewing. Outside of waxed linen thread I’ve bought at Tandy that’s a bit thick for clothing my linen will part after a few inches. I’ve tried wetting, waxing with bees wax and oil ( that didn’t work at all) I double the thread and singled the thread and used Glover needles and embroidery needles and small sewing needles. And at three to four inches it parts. Cotten I can run off a fathom, double it and sew with a yard of thread. My best with linen is two feet doubled waxed and then get about four inches then re- tie a new hank.

Little breakage with the thread I use (even with effort, this thread is difficult to break). The first bobbin of linen thread I bought from Townsend and was "slubby" (had little blobs of linen along its length) - horrible to use, broke constantly and the little slubs were impossible to get through the material. I now use 2-ply thread I buy from a local Rendezvous vendor. I wax well before sewing and re-wax as needed to keep things moving smoothly.
