Any shoot a Colt's 1862 Police?

AP_1876.jpg

Looks like a good kit gun for the trail. .36 cal. Should I get one? I see Uberti makes one.

Thoughts?

I dont have one, have not shot one but I want one. If you want one I feel before you check anymore posts you should order it! I hear Cabelas has a $50.00 off sale on BP revolvers. HURRY

I have four of them. Two are Colt and two are Uberti. They are beautiful. The revolvers are small and well proportioned. They take light loads and tend to shoot high at close ranges. It all boils down to knowing where to hold on the target, or changing the front sight. Capping for me is slow because I have big fingers. Other than that, I know my limitations and those of the revolvers.

The Pietta revolvers are only sort of like the. Colt or Uberti. If you want something more in line with Colt, then get the Uberti.

Taylor's lists the 4.5" barrel, not cheap.

Is there a specific reason you want the short barrel? These guns have superb handling/pointing but are very light and the extra barrel length is a help with steady hold and not a hindrance in any way. I have the Police with a 6.5" barrel and a '62 Pocket Navy (6.5") which is slightly heaver and even easier to hold steady. The Police is 1 lb. 10.4 oz., Navy is 1 lb. 12.8 oz.. I haven't had the time to shoot either so I can't help you there.

Midway has both but only with 6.5" barrels for $350

Hawkeye2 the reason I am leaning toward the 4 1/2" length is I want it as an easy toting kit gun for camping and in the field. Maybe even small game (rabbit/squirrel) if I find myself back east. I'm in the military and it could change at any time. Not sure how I'll carry it yet, maybe a 5 1/2" in a crossdraw would be just as handy and more shootable?

I do have a 4" 1849 and a 6" one too though it lacks a loading lever. I like the 6" one much better. It seems to hold better and I like the looks of longer barreled Colts too but that may just be my personal feelings. I remember the first time I got to hold a Colt Pocket Police, I was 10 years old and fell in love with it, still my favorite.

Some years back (25) I had one of each barrel length and shot them both occasionally. These are fun little pistols and to my eye the 6½" barreled model is the prettiest pistol I have ever seen. I bought these pistols used at a local gun show and noticed the loading lever on the 6½" was bent some. Noticeable, but, fully functional. If there is a downside to these lovely little Colt lookalikes is if you have large hands. I find they are a bit like trying to shoot Ruger Bearcat, fun, but a little frustrating to hold and shoot well. The grip size seems more suitable for twelve year old kid than a 6'4" old guy. My brother liked them so much I gifted them to him and he shot them more than I did and ended up wearing out the hand on one of them and thanks to Dixie Gun Works had a replacement part in short order. I missed them so much I acquired another 6½" model.

Po-po?

Yes why the Gangsta name? It's not cute.

As former sworn officer it is offensive. I retired at 49 due to Rheumatism Arthritis. Didn't like it then and don't like it now just ghetto talk.

However,
The gun is sweet and way better for any use than a 31 cal IMHO

Something to consider for the Pocket Police revolver... the longer the barrel, the better sight radius. Also, with the longer barrel you get a longer loading lever. That makes it much easier to seat the ball. :hmm:

I grew up "in the hood" for a few years and we all jokingly referred to the local police by that term. They were not offended and we had a great relationship with them and mutual respect.

I apologize if my "ghetto talk" offended you. In my circle it is just a humorous reference to police officers. I meant no harm and thank you for your service.

Excellent point about loading lever length! If you are loading a round ball that shaves a lead ring when loading you will likely need an extension on that loading lever. I know myself and others that tried the short barreled one I had found it near impossible to load without an extension.

My Pop was a police officer for many years in the late 60's and early 70's when they were referred to as "pigs". Pop always said he liked it cuz it stood for "polite intelligent gentleman" :surrender:

I could NOT do the job today, not with body camera's. I'd be in the slammer first or second shift!

I've been in law enforcement since 1987 and don't find the term "po-po" offensive. People call us much worse.

Anyway, I think whichever barrel length you choose will make a dandy trail gun. Also, you could probably go with a strong side holster and be just fine.

Thank you for your service.
