My powder measure is set at six on the scale and it pours about fifty six grains in weight. I used it as a plinking amount for my .54 cal rifle and it is an accurate load for fifty yards with this rifle. I left the measurement there when I got my .50 cal rifle and the load did just about as well with it. Didn't change a thing when I got my .45 cal Pedersoli, and had the same results with accuracy.

I know this is not really a hunting load for the .50 or the .54, but it might be for the .45. I think I'll just keep blasting with this load of 3X til I need a real hunting load then maybe just get another measure for the hunter and keep the plinking measure like it is. All kind of options here and all good. Think I may even make a hunting load measure out of something.

I'm just rambling here, keeping my thoughts in order. I've come somewhat obsessed with these muzzle loading guns.

Lots of variables involved there. Methinks the stars and moon are in the right alignment for you. Yes, might be light for hunting. OTOH, methinks we often underestimate the effect a round ball can have even with mild loads.

It sounds like you have an adjustable measure. I have one and in 3 seconds or less can go from 0 to 120 grains. (Or anywhere in between)
That said, if 56 grains works for you... so be it. I have a tendency to develop a hunting load for each rifle, and shoot with that. I stay competent and accurate for both target and hunting this way.

I like the adjustable for bench and range work, both are fine. For a hunting measure I'm leaning toward a deer antler or something drilled out for the larger measure of powder. Easier to hang on the outside, the metal measures are ok but a lot larger and heavier and take a lot of room in a possibles bag. I am leaning toward a horn powder horn for hunting also rather than the brass dispenser. Big and heavy in the bag too. We'll see how all this pans out in the future.

I think I have come to the decision that hunting this year I will just pocket 3 or 4 of the TC cylinders. Each will hold a powder charge, a patched ball and a primer cap. Flip top type lid that is waterproof and super easy to just throw in a pocket.
But, back to the original thread, if a patched round ball produces the best accuracy, go for it. Why fight physics???

Your best load for a gun may be x amount. Most guns will shoot well with a wide variety of loads. And the difference between your best load and another load may be not enough to notice off hand
