90 plus degrees here today so I took a trip to my local shop to browse and cool off! I found a possible diamond in the rough that could be mine for 195.00. It’s the above rifle, percussion in 50 caliber. Bore is dirty but good, no rust. Barrel has 90 plus bluing some light surface rust which will easily clean off. Lock is case hardened and has all its color. Tight and works fine. Looks like original Ramos too also good.Nipple is great no rust and comes right out. NOW the stock. It’s one piece with a few scuff marks, all brass good. Looks like the he owner put a high gloss finish on it, unless that’s factory not sure. I want to strip it down and oil finish. The only problem, of course, is that there appears to be a faint hair line crack on the right side of the stock. Rear of trigger guard, where the back of the lock meets the stock, wrist area, under one inch in length. Tough to see if it’s actually in the wood or under the finish. Think it’s worth buying as a project? What say you my knowledgeable friends. 😀 thanks as usual Art

I dunno, if it was in my area I would buy it for that price. You could strip the gloss varnish off the stock. Check the crack then too. Maybe make a period looking wrist repair out of thin sheet.

Refinish the stock with tung oil when ready, blacken the brass somtime, maybe brown the barrel down the road. Sure sounds like fun to me.

And, you can shoot the heck out of it throughout.

Pete

A little rust and dirty bore, you should be able to get the price down. I would think closer to 150 would be right for that rifle. At least in my area. Those were good accurate barrels on the Kentuckians. I built a rifle for my Son around a .45 barrel and it is a tack driver.

Went back yesterday and it was sold! You snooze you loose in this shop! There will always be others, I hope. Thanks for the looks and help. Art
