New toys c1804, 45 calibre and hardly been used, springs and things are all firm and tight

I don't usually buy pairs because they tend to be expensive, but I was born and raised in Oxford so they caught my eye...

I'm happy for me too, they are fun pistols

I had a hope that the caps might open, but of course it predates percussion caps so there was nothing to keep in there. Ther lion's mouth is a woodscrew :idunno:

I see what may be an underlug on the barrel in front of the lock. Are they screw barrels?

They are screw barrels. Not much of a barrel though, only about 1 1/8" beyond the threads :hmm:

NICE find Squire. They look great, and in good condition. Lets call them "boot" pistols. :haha:
Very cool looking pair. Love the butt caps. Congrats.

I too was born and raised in Oxford! And without a doubt they are lovely pistols. There was an interesting article in the MLAGB magazine recently all about pistols made in Oxford.
My own personal memento is a nice percussion single shot travelling pistol by Beckhuson. It's in very nice, clean condition and would definitely make a shooter. If I could figure out how, I would post a couple of pictures! Just out of interest I bought my first gun in Venables!

Exquisite workmanship. I am going to speculate created for a high placed personage. Though very short, but being screw on, I am going to guess the barrels taper? And thanks so much for sharing this find with us.

Yes, Brian Godwin let me publish them (I edit 'Black Powder' magazine). They and several other articles are also available in pdf format for download via my personal web site. See the downloads under: British Gunmakers.

I got my first new gun at Venables, a Webley Junior. Took it down Willow Walk, between the old Port Meadow allotments and the railway lines, to try it out
