Firepistons have always fascinated me. Just wondering :hmm: how many guys have made a functional wood firepiston using natural material for a gasket? I had a nice one about 15 years ago and the gasket was greased silk thread.

I'd like to see some period documentation for them in Europe and the Americas, since the idea was patented in 1807...after being spotted in Italy in 1745 by an air rifle maker (and having been part of paleo cultures in Asia and the Pacific for much longer.)

I'd never heard of them until (many years ago) I saw a video of a Bushman hunter using one.

Supposedly they were popular until matches that light when struck were available.

:hmm:

Functional, YES, natural gasket, NO. I tried thin leather and it was a no go for me. Now natural rubber???
