I got some .445" balls the other week and have been itching to try them in my smoothrifle.

A .440" rolls down the barrel. The .445" need a push.

The first rabbit was not very photogenic!

I was only low by an inch plus but it was enough to wreck the front end! The back end was fine though.

I switched to shot soon after satisfying myself the .445" ball was a good thing!

The next bunny was a sitter at 25yards with fine shot.

Check the size of gut!!

Loading shot again soon after we were part of a dispute, a dispute between rabbits, one of which run out of a hedge in front of Jess and I. It turned and run, feet skidding on the loose earth I raised that long gun and fired. The rabbit disappeared in a cloud of smoke and dust. The pattern was spot on.

Excellent, Brits. I'm impressed and surprised. I didn't know you ever shot running rabbits. :haha:

I have a Hawken-style rifle with a .445 bore. Obviously, .445 balls won't load in it but I have a heck of a time getting a .440 to load with a patch after the 1st shot.

Good job on the rabbits.

I never picture Brits hunting tree rats. I know you got’em and youdo, but when I think of British hunting I think Thumper,Bambi and birds.
Do you eat them? I have them on quick bread with meat gravy mostly. How do you eat them there?

I don't often eat them but when I do I just go with the mood. It may by fried, roasted or boiled.

Thanks y'all.

Brit, Great "happy photo"; dogs are the best hunting partners.

When shooting bare ball what wads and lube are you using?

Percy
I put three thin leather wads wet with olive oil under the ball. A thin card on top of the ball.

When using wads wet with olive oil between the powder and ball does the oil migrate into the powder and cause a misfire? Do you have to unload your gun at the end of the day or can you leave it loaded for several days?

Percy
