Haven't shot my Hawken in so long that I had to review the procedure.
I am shooting a patched .440 swaged round ball with 60 grains of FFFg black powder.
Each shot would blow the hammer back to full cock.
Is this unusual?
I tried 40 grains and the hammer went to half cock.
Does this indicate I have an appropriately tight patch and ball combination?
Does it say anything about my powder charge?

All replies appreciated.

The most common cause of a hammer blowing back as you describe is a worn out nipple with a too large hole. It might be other issues but your load isn’t excessive so I would start with a new nipple.

Thanks, everybody!
I have a new nipple on order from Track of the Wolf.
Any other good suppliers anyone want to recommend?

Agree with others. Nipple the problem. Wish you had ordered several. Nipples are pretty much disposable items. Good quality of the 'hot shot' type will last a long time but eventually all need replacement.

The hot shot nipple arrived today and the hole was about 1/3 the size of the one I took out. I'll get to the range early next week. Looking forward to it!

The TC Hawken in 45 caliber was the first ML I ever purchased. I was 14 when I bought it. My friend and I used to sit on a bluff overlooking the Brazos River and shoot at sticks and other items as they floated past. That's a nice rifle you have there.
