Lesson For The newcomer #6
The Ramrod.
This is used for seating the patched ball on the powder charge in the breech of the rifle barrel.
It is also used for cleaning and maintaining the conditions inside the barrel.
If you are using a wooden ram rod it is wise to force it down the barrel with short 10 or 12 inch series of movements. To reach up and force the entire rod down the barrel in one movement risks bending the rod to the point where it breaks causing one's hand to come down on the splinted end causing much pain and bad language.
This type of accident caused the invention of the steel reange rod which does not splinter.
