Recently purchased a Pedersoli French AN IX pistol. I know these were typically "horse" pistols and would have been in a holster or scabbard across the pommel or something but how would have a mountain man/trapper carried a pistol on his person? Just tucked in a belt or sash? Or did they make or have leather holsters? I searched the forum with little luck. Thank you for any insight.

You mean,......you didn't get the optional horse with the pistol? :rotf: :rotf:

Belt clip may be your option. I've been considering one.

I think both. Normally I'd say they were in holsters strung over the pommel. I say this because it would be cumbersome to set traps in a stream with a pair of pistols stuck in a belt/sash. If trouble was an issue and you were on foot, then as a precaution- tuck into belt/sash.
On the leather holster strung on a belt- like you I've looked around but found nothing. So....the pistols in a holster on the pommel and then stuck under belt if needed.

I used to have a horse... got too expensive to feed!!

I have seen a very plain open top leather holster that Dixie Gun Works sells for single shot pistols and was considering buying that, just didn't know if that was hc/pc? The holster or belt clip just seem a lot more convenient and stable that just stuffed in a belt or sash.

YEARS ago I bought a soft leather holster for a mnt pistol from Cabelas. Would work. I do mean SOFT though. You could do a search. I believe I still have it somewhere.

I saw that holster on Cabelas website also.

Did mountain men/trappers ever use baldric type holsters?

A lot of today's replicas come with the belt clip but the photos I've seen of "mountain man" pistols- I myself haven't seen these clips. I think they were just stuffed under a belt.
The leather holster shown looks good. There is a holster at the Sonoma Barricks Museum in California that looks similar but I don't know how to post a photo.

Yeah I like the look of the holster linked above. The Leatherman makes high quality stuff, I have a couple of his bags. Going to order the holster and belt. I just hope it fits this pistol, because the pistol shown is a kentucky style but I think mine may be a little thicker.

I am not very crafty... even a simple holster like your's is way beyond my skill.

You may probably realize this already, but make sure you tell The Leatherman what pistol you want to use in that holster, so he can be sure to make it correctly to size. If he hasn't done holsters for that model, he may need to ask you for measurements around you pistol at various points.

BTW, a holster a little too big is far better than one too small. You can easily wet form a holster that is too big.

Ok, Gus,
Does The Leatherman make each holster when ordered?
Do you believe the Pedersoli AN IX is oversize for the holster in the link?
If so, do you have one?
Do you own the holster in the link?
Could you expound to or at least explain to the OP about stock leather products needing a time to adjust to proper fit for each pistol?
Do you know of or could your share The Leatherman return policy?

My advice to the OP was clearly intended to help both the OP and The Leatherman, to get a holster that would fit the OP's pistol and everyone come out happy in the end.

The OP sure seemed to understand that in his posted reply above yours.

But you post some kind of weird and completely uncalled for type of interrogation questions.

Since you weren't civil in your interrogative post and you are not Claude, nor the New Owner, nor any of the Moderators - you have no business interrogating another poster on this forum and I will not answer your post above other than this.

Now, if the OP has other questions that I may be able to help with, of course I would be happy to answer any questions I can.

Does anyone have evidence of any sort that flintlock pistols were ever carried in a belt holster?

Spence

Hi Spence,

The only thing close to a person wearing a pistol on a belt that I know of were the engravings of Pirates like Edward Teach (Blackbeard) who carried pistols in a shoulder bandoleer of some sort.

Here is one such period "artist's conception" of how he did it.
