A Chunk Gun Medal winner and former sceptic contacted meyesterfayand said he had bought two samples of highly recommended fabric from a highly recommended recommender Both were .018 when measured with a micrometer the usual way we would use a micrometer if measuring sheet steel or piston rings.
However when taking a compresses measurement of the two fabrics, one shrank to ,011 and the other shrank to about .007.
You see the problem here.
If you were having dandy results with the fabric that shrank to .011 and ran out and you replaced it with a different .018 that shrank to about .007 you might wonder what happened as both fabrics were sold as .018 but for some trance reason your groups opened up alarmingly.

That's why I feel that the compressed measurement id the only one to go by.

I don't remember what the denim fabric I bought would have measured in an uncompressed method, but I believe, compressed it it shrank to about .00065 for my two ,45 Hawkens.

I'm not convinced perzact thickness is the most important factor to achieve accuracy. I do believe consistency is that factor. I learned that lesson in my early days as a professional photographer. If I changed the equation, my results showed it. As for patch material, I buy blue stripe mattress ticking from Walmart. I do measure and, so far, it is always the same even when bought months apart. Back in the old days of serious 'X' hunting I used denim an bought it by the bolt to keep things consistent. Gave that up when I got tired of having to use a big mallet to seat my oversized balls. Find wat works for you and stick with it.

Rifleman 1776,
Apparently Walmart is consistent in their producing the same thickness of striped cloth.
Consistency eliminates change in result.
Now if one was extremely consistent and wrong. He would the same disaster time after time. Your final sentence of find what works for you a stick with it is excellent. Then if in being as consistent as possible there is a change in the result it let's you know that there has been a change in something you are using of which you are unaware.I have had people people triumphantly tell me they cahged powder ty[e, and amount, added to the lubrication and used a thicker patch and the next shot was dead on. I asked to tell me which change or combination of which gave them this result.

How is your good daughter doing? Mine are both now in their middle sixties and have gone off in two different directions, both favorable.

Mods, forgive a bit of :eek:ff

Dutch, nice of you to ask about my daughter. She is married and doing well. She remembers your kindness when she was having her surgeries at the Shrine Hospital in St. Louis, as do I. She still has the coin you sent her. Glad to hear your daughters are fine and having a good life also. Take care. Frank
