Hi, I've got several cap n Ballers, I have my first Flintlock on the way, purchased a used Pedersoli Pennsylvania. Needs a Ramrod and Flints. What would be the Proper size Flint... being new to flintlocks I am clueless? I see 5/8 square, 5/8 x3/4.... a few other sizes. Any Help Please? Down the road I hope to make my own from Spall, but baby steps come first.

Thanks in advance.

A couple of suggestions. Check online for a Pedersoli manual for your rifle and they may suggest the correct size. Also, Track of the Wolf and probably other venders include suggested sizes for different makes and models of flintlocks that are commonly available. Just check Track's web site.

I'm sure someone here who has that rifle will also chime in. I have been using some homemade "flints" from local chert and it is fun to use a rock that you have managed to knap out yourself. Mine aren't pretty, but they do work.

Thanks, I've thoroughly searched the Pedersoli site/manuals, says nothing about flint size at all. TOW doesn't mention the Penn rifle, but I'll bet the Lock is the same as the Kentucky which they they do have a suggestion for. Was hoping someone here might have the PA Rifle.

Thanks again, Happy Knapping :)

Measure the width of the frizzen for the width of the flint to use. Put the cock at half cock and measure from the jaw screw to the face of the closed frizzen and deduct 1/16". This should get you close.

StubShaft got it: the flint should be as wide as the frizzen (provided it clears the barrel when fully down) and should sit 1/8" to 1/16" from the frizzen face at half-cock.

Ramrod should fit snugly in the thimbles and be flush with the muzzle when fully seated.
