I have some gift cards for Cabelas that I would like to burn up on a Blue Ridge Flinter in 54. I swear they used to go on sale after Christmas, but they have not discounted them this year. Can I expect a sale soon? Usually they have seasonal sales. They seem to not have the coupons/sales as they did before the Bass Pro buyout.
And I guess the Blue Ridge is worth owning?

I bought one in 54 caliber back in the early 90's. They were around 350.00 back then I think. I had the usual problems most post here about Pedersolis. The lock was critical about the angle of the flint and it would work best with the bevel down. The frizzen gets soft pretty fast and reliable ignition is gone. Re-harden it and that problem is solved. The touch hole liner is too narrow and needs to be drilled out or replaced. The blue ridges are solid rifles with those issues fixed.

Had a .45 with no issues (touch hole likely was too small but this was before I was here and knew it so I will attribute the few misfire to that. Didn't fire it enough to comment on frizzen issues. I would personally get a Lyman myself?

I like full stock long rifles but IRC the blue ridge had mighty thin wood on each side of the barrel. GOOD looker but weak? :idunno:

Huh.... My two have so much wood up there I've thought seriously about shave jobs.

I would suggest also handling one before buying one. I thought I wanted one to because I liked the looks of them. After handling one I wasn't wanting one anymore. Al

If you are close to a Cabelas store check the bargain barn regularly. Sometimes you can run into a return or floor model for a significant reduction in price. Also don't be afraid to ask the clerk or manager in the bargain barn for additional discounts. I've had several instances where the additional reduction was pretty significant. Now, that was before the buyout, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Cabela's IS having it's Pedersoli sale..., they just didn't include the Blue Ridge Hunter [Frontier] this year. :(

I found them for $950.00, $795.00, and $649.99...., Cabela's was the place that had them for $649.99. :shocked2:

Yes I would say they are worth owning. I have a .50 Blue Ridge that was my first flinter and can honestly say it has very reliable ignition. I haven't had to tweak it at all. It did shoot way low so I had to file the front sight down a lot. It still looks like new as I have only shot it around 60 times. I have bought several more flintlocks since that one and figure I will be selling it at some point here in the near future. greg :)

Don't recall who it was (and I'm embarrassed because it was very good gun carving and web posting), but in the last year or so someone on here posted a looooong string of photos over several months documenting his rework of a Frontier. Find that, and it will be enough to have you running for the nearest source of a Frontier of your own. Wow.

I think Crewdawg did one, as well as someone else. In both cases, I remember the results being very nice.

Hey! Brown Bear, I spent an hour trying to find the fellow from S.E. Minnesota that reworked one of the Blue Ridge. Perhaps there are others, but, is this the rebuild you are thinking of?

This makes it a completely different rifle ... for the
better I might add.

Here is the flickr album of photographs and descriptions of what is going on.

Nicely done project!

Frontier direct from Pedersoli and Blue Ridge from Cabelas are quite a ways apart.

Huh.... Something must have changed then. My bud has a couple of Blue Ridges and when you lay them alongside my Pedersoli Frontiers, you have to read the barrel inscriptions to tell which is which.

I may be wrong, but I recall Cabelas usually had a black powder rifle sale after Christmas. That coincides with the PA flintlock season so I was always tempted to get one. So I have some gift cards saved up and I was waiting on a sale. I don't need it ASAP, so 100 off for waiting on a sale seems prudent.
I think they look nice, and they are 7.2 pounds, so on paper they look like a fit for deer season around here. I appreciate the comment that I may want to hold one before buying. With the free shipping they are offering, I was tempted to pay 650 plus tax delivered. But now I think I'll try to find a day for the 100+ mile one way journey to hold one to my shoulder. Dixons is close, and so is a really good butcher shop. So I can hit 3 stores to make a day of it.
I also have the option of a second generation custom builder a few miles away. He is building my good friend a rifle, and am impressed with his work. Too bad he doesn't take gift cards, I have 900.00 saved up. I am also thinking about selling those cards and just starting a build.
