I just read a book I can recommend. It's _Gunpowder: Alchemy, Bombards and Pyrotechnics, The History of the Explosive that Changed the World_, by Jack Kelly. Very educational, well written, easy reading.

Thanks for mentioning this book. Our local library doesn't have a copy, of course, but I just ordered a used copy. I enjoy reading about how a specific invention has influenced history.

I think you will enjoy it, Jeff. I got another of Kelly's books from the library today and am looking forward to it. This one is Band of Giants: The Amateur Soldiers Who Won America's Independence.

Wow! Our library has Band Of Giants. Given my eclectic interests that doesn't happen too often. It goes on my list to check out the next time I'm there. The 'to be read soon' pile of books keeps growing. Fortunately, I allow cutting in line. :grin:

Almost all modern fiction leaves me cold. 19th and very early 20th century fiction is much more appealing. But that leaves more time to read history, poetry, and classical literature.

Our reading habits seem similar. l have a hard time finding contemporary entertainment of any type which I really enjoy. I think I'm drifting into that phase of my life known as 'outlived my culture'. :grin:
