Location
England.
Straight from work I hit the hedge rows looking for an unsuspecting rabbit.
This Siberian east wind is raw for these parts and has them hunkered down and I don't blame them! Brrrr.
The gun has not been cleaned for ten days and has been loaded for 48 hours also. When you use plenty of natural oils and fats there is no need to worry, especially when you can keep the gun warm and dry.

When a rabbit did show I got good fire.

A fine fat bunny Nate, well done. I don't see Jess in the photo, did she take it? Stay warm my friend.........robin
Thanks.
No sir, Jess was at home, I stopped by this spot straight from work

Puppies are too smart to get out in weather when you should be warm by the fire ,But there is something too fun about hunting when your fingers are froze in to the shape nessicary to squeeze the trigger

TRUE STORY:

When young n dumb (n drunk etc. ) I thought it a grand idea to take my bestest buddy Sarge the German Shepherd out for a rabbit hunt! Twas cold. Twas Windy Twas soberingly cold n windy. It was spitting snow, about 2 degrees and a wind about 20 MH. We walked about 3/4 mile and headed for the ol truck. When within site of the truck we passed a rabbit sitting about 10 feet away under a cedar tree. He looked at me and I looked him and we looked at the rabbit.... and walked to the truck! Now you KNOW its cold when the dog wont chase a rabbit 10' away and the hunter wont take his hands out of the pockets :haha: Lil more to the story but thats all I will confess to here and now.

Nice day in the field Brit

BTW Jess smelled that sucker as you came in and he is likely still pouting!!

You're killing me Nate!!!

My smoothbore has been loaded for rabbit for a month now. Though I've been out with friends and their beagle dogs 6 or 7 times, I've been the unlucky feller always standing in the wrong spot.

Tomorrow marks the last day of the season here and a couple of us are tempted to contract a 24 hour bug precluding us from working. A day in the thickets sounds therapeutic. That is, if it's not a washout (rain forecasted).

Nice bunny friend.

Thanks for sharing with us, Skychief

Nice fat hopper there. I see a pot of stew with carrots, onions, new potatoes and a stewed tomato or two. ENJOY!

Not forgetting a good pie crust on top with a hump in the middle

This year would of been my 21st annual rabbit hunt on my farm with friends. We chase rabbits, rifles only, do a lot of shooting at my ranges, eat a big juicy steak, have a drink and play cards in the evening.

It was schedualed for last weekend, but the weather turned and it was going to rain all day with a wintry mix of snow and freezing rain so I canceled it.

It has been rescheduled for this weekend, but it is the anti rabbit, rabbit hunt. The season will be closed by this weekend. But we will still be able to do all the other activities. I think I hear the rabbits giving a sigh of relief.

It seems odd to me, all the regulation and seasons for squirrel and rabbits for you guys.
We have no closed seasons for many species, rabbit, squirrel and all sorts of birds.

AZ has a 365 day rabbit season too. However I will not hunt em after the last snow (how do you know? we have had snow in July up here :youcrazy: ) or before the first frost cuz Dad said so, (Dad knowed stuff). They get worms or something? Dad would never shoot a standing rabbit (I do  ) as he wanted to see em run to make sure they were healthy :idunno:

We have a year-round rabbit season along with the varmints (coons, coyotes, possums, beaver, skunks, etc.). However, if we waited for snow, we'd only be able to hunt every 12-15 years.

I've always been impressed by the huge English rabbits, but I guess they have always been that way. Here is a painting of Brits in his younger days, look at the size of that rabbit!

Well, following tenngun's lead in another thread, it's "on the order" of a rabbit. :haha:

Whichever, you did very well. And all by yourself, too, no help from Jess.

You have a season for Rabbit?
Here there is no season here, but most good hunters give them the spring and summer to make more rabbit. The incidence of parasites is a lot higher in the summer as well. My Grandfather had a set rule, Only hunt rabbits in the months with an "R" in them. That gives them May, June, July and August to get eating size.
