This is the second gun I mentioned. It is at least .30 caliber, has set trigger. It is marked J. Golcher on the lock. No other markings on gun. From what I have seen on the web, this maker sold components as well as complete guns. Hoping someone may recognize it either way.

Thanks

This gun looks almost identical to mine. Mine is a .36 caliber with the Jos. Golcher lock. The underside of the barrel on mine is stamped Pennabkr. From my research, Pennabkr was a gunsmith in western PA. in the 1830-1858 period. He used locks from Golcher. His barrels were considered very accurate, and mine is.

Thanks for the great information. Can you tell me exactly where "Pennabkr" is stamped on the barrel?

Mate a ver fine pair of rifles you have there. One for target matches and one for hunting with. I imagine the bores are in excellent condition. Get Ned Roberts Book the Caplock-Muzzle Loading rifle, it will give you all the information on getting them going. You may need to find a custom mould maker as the target rifle may be in an odd caliber. It will take a paper patched flat based bullet likely as not. The rifle in this thread a ball most likely.

cheers
Gordon

Panne becket was a gunsmith near Berks County. Penne becket was a barrel maker and relative in same area. So many rifles marked Pennebecker were made by other gunsmiths. Pennebecker the gunsmith signed his barrels in script

The spelling on my gun is Pennabakr, and my research indicated that the original spelling was Pennebaker, but for some reason the gun smith changed the spelling to Pennabakr so as not to be confused with other gun smiths with similar names.
