Wondering it there's a simple and safe way I could change the granulation of 1f powder to 2 or 3f powder.

A friend gave me a pound of 1f swiss, I'm shooting it out of my 50 cal CVA Hawken and the accuracy isn't too good. I would like to see if a smaller grain would perform better.

get a shotgun or a cannon. OR mix it with a can of 3f.

You only got a pound of it, not enough to work up a load.

I bought a small mortar/canon on flea bay a while back.. Good way of using up powder I dont want, plus shotguns are also a great way of getting rid of unwanted powder.

Put a priming charge of FFFg under it?

Or 50:50?

Anybody tried that? I'z just thinking maybe get good use out of the Fg and make your FFFg last twice as long.

I've often wondered if mixing different powders together might not be feasable. Certainly mixing different granulations or real BP would at least go bang for you. I wonder about mixing real BP and some of the subs? It would be a way to use up one or the other anyway.

The duplex load thing has often been advocated (I've never tried it) but I'm somewhat skeptical about how consistent accuracy and velocities would be. The interface between to 2 materials is going to be somewhat different each time, which of course would affect the pressure curve and ultimately velocities and accuracy. If someone has some anecdotal data to share about both of the above, I would like to hear it.

I have a can of 1f I got on accident. We used to have a store here that sold the real stuff and it was way across town so when I was down that way I would P/U a can or two just to make me feel like I didn't waist a trip. Anyway I should have checked it when I bought it but instead I just put it away. A few months later when I was checking my inventory, I saw it. Too late to take back then.

Anyway I was planning on shooting it out of my 58. I also was going to mix some with 2f to see how it does and it does good I'd mix some more. It's either than or buy a small cannon.

When I was using BP for a prime with synthetic in my flintlock I had zero issues, groups stayed the same as when using just BP alone. You simply load exactly 10 grains black, thump the side by the lock then pour in the remainder of the charge (which would be 10 gr less due to the "prime"). Always went off and always shot to POA. That was my experience. Now that I am aware you can get BP via UPS I don't shoot anything but BP in the flinter and mostly in the cap guns as well.

Well I tried shooting it as is, it didn't do all that bad, but it didn't do all that great either.
I'm definitely not going to buy a cannon, I guess I'll just have to shoot it up.

In a word: No.
Crushing powder will give you just that, crushed powder. Not granules as any size has. Plus, that powder REALLY has a lot of dust type powder in it. Your pressures could exceed safe limits.
Don't do it. :nono:

That's OK.
It has long been my practice to mix powders I'm going to use in the field. Small quantities in a can go into another can clearly marked as mixed granulations. This is usually 2Fg and 3Fg, often of different brands. As long as you keep your charges in safe limits you will be fine. Any loss of accuracy is insignificant in the field.
