I found an 1800's chewing gum recipe. :shocked2:

"Prepared balsam of tulu, two ounces, refined sugar, one ounce, oatmeal, three ounces, soak the gum in water, then mix all the ingredients; roll in powdered sugar to make the sticks."

Aniseed sugar plums

Dry two pounds of green aniseed in the stove- rub it in the hands to break off the stems, winnow to rid of dust, then put it in swinging pan, and coat with sugar boiled to a thread, so as to render the candies firm and brittle, when coated sufficiently, whiten and polish them.

co when did chickle from the manizaro tree come into use.

I read somewhere about a gum made from the sap of the sugar pine, but that would be fur trade and later at the earliest.
