Would Mineral Oil be a good Patch Lubricant? Or possibly mixed with Murphy's Oil Soap as a cleaner.

Any oil works so far as getting the PRB down the bore, but mineral oil isn't going to do any cleaning on the way down, which is kind of nice.

I like and use Ballistol as a general oil, but never got it as a patch lube or cleaner.

There are tons of great lubes, but since you mentioned it, Murphy's Oil Soap mixed 1-1 with alcohol(I like the 90% stuff) is excellent. It is also very good as a dry lube for patches if you like that sort of thing.

Spit, of course always works, and i would use that over mineral oil.

M.A.P.= Murphy's, alcohol, peroxide

M.A.W. = Murphy's, alcohol, water

Both clean great.....And can be used as a patch lube...Use 90% or higher alcohol...I use pure denatured ethanol aka. HEET in the yellow bottle, probably hard to find south of the frost belt.

It also smells better than Ballistol.

The problem with mixing Mineral oil and murphy's might be achieving a proper consistency.....I've tried mixing oils into cleaning solutions and usually run into emulsion problems....Something I could solve, but defeats the K.I.S.S. principle.

If you try it, let us know how it works.... :thumbsup:

Clyde,

Curious if you think the peroxide adds anything- I couldn't see any difference with or without.

Same for me with the water in MAW- always found Murphy's had enough water on its own. Though I haven't tried the water mix in quite a few years.

Irregardless the Murphy's concoctions is good stuff and i use it regularly- kind of feels like a poor mans Lehigh Valley Lube

I think it does make a difference, but not a big one...The solution seems to lose effectiveness over time..water works too....But not all water is the same.

Maybe I will do a blind test some day.
