I finally finished my "colonial" fowler. Its not really a copy of anything just a working fowler.

I used a Chambers Fowler Lock, steel furniture from Muzzleloader builders supply an L&R Trigger and a 36 inch Greg Christian .62 cal Oct/Rnd smoothbore barrel. The Blank came from Dunlap.

I am really happy with the way it came out.

Thanks for all the advice along the way!!

Well done!! Congrats on building a beautiful piece. If that dont get one motivayed to build their own, nothing will. :hatsoff:

Good job. Certainly a fine looking fowler with beautiful wood! I'd have gone 46" or 48" barrel but then that's just me!

I surely do like the longer barrels too but they are just so hard to move around. I'm mot talking about shooting.

I already have 2 that I had to make custom cases for that I strap to the top of my vehicle wrapped in a tarp when I go Hunting or to Rendezvous. Lets mot even talk about flying commercial.

This one ended up 51 inches total length which will fit just barely in a TSA approved case. Yes there are a few cases out there that will hold a 42 inch barrel but they come mighty dear! And I'm just a poor hunter. I want to take the turkey grand slam with this flintlock!

Thanks for all the kind words!

I did a lye wash, then one coat of aquafortis and 5 coats of TruOil and then 3 coats of gunstock wax (so Far)

0000 steel wool between oil coats. Buffed with an old tshirt between wax coats.

I used Tracks Tried and True Brown on the steel. I did not do the lock but I think I probably will.

I wet sanded the steel to 220 grit using 409 as the wetting agent and rinsed with warm water.

Rubber gloves for all phases except wax.

I am supper pleased with the results!!

That's a great looking smoothbore and a very good job. It looks - architecture, lock - a lot like mine. You did very well.

I thought about sending off to have it Jug choked but I figured I would see what it can do out of the gate first.

I hope I don't eat my words but I have killed several birds with the cylinder bore. Part of the fun/frustration is getting then in that close!

Send that to me and I'll do the pre jug choke tests for you and give you the results. I'll have to do a LOT of tests, including in the field hunting tests. I'll test it for you on turkey, squirrels, rabbits, etc. to be sure it works on everything!

Great job. You'll get a lifetime of pleasure out of it for sure. :hatsoff:
