Hi all! What are you using to attach your powder measure and vent pick to your bag with? I am currently using hemp cord from Wal Mart but it is fraying and I fear it won't hold up. I've thought about replacing it with artifical sinew.

Can anyone list some period (or simulation) cordage/thread to hang one's measure and pick from their bag that is durable and tough?

Thanks!

Vigi leather thong, or take hemp cord and braid it. Artificial sinew was all the rage once stands out like Tandy golden deer skin today,I used a lot myself and it servers for a lot of none historic in my house. Waxed linen saddle sewing cord braided also works good. Then you can have just the hemp and wax it. Braded hair works well, although you might regret cutting a hunk off your wife’s head. Tandy sells horse hair. They also sell real sinew that can be made in to a tough cord.

Everything wears out eventually. Part of this game is keeping yer kit in shape. Personally, I would stick with the hemp. Cheap and durable. I got mine from a place with a picture of a funny plant in the window and a proprietor who greets you saying "ya man".

Reflecting my Southwestern upbringing and the big stack of hides over my leather bench, I prefer a whang cut from good leather. You'd probably think it was a leather bootlace to look at it. Tough, durable, cheap and quickly replaceable.

I wax any cordage I use and it is amazing how much longer it holds up. Use a paste wax and rub it in. Let it sit over night and then stroke it with a rag to remove excess.

Real sinew requires a lot of attention. It dies out and becomes stiff and unless you have access to large animal sinew, takes a lot of braiding to lengthen it out enough. I use Barbours Linen cordage for this. It's strong.

Artificial sinew is just about like dental floss. It stretches a lot.

Strip of leather.

There is no one way to do this. I find that cord from quality hemp will work fine & rubbing it with some bees wax will help it last longer & not hold as much moisture if it gets rained on. I get a variety of hemp cord and rope from Turkey Foot Traders. Others are happy with leather.

not sure about the durability as compared to other materials, but i've had waxed linen braided together work for me ... it's been about four years now without significant fraying.

just keep after it ... check your gear each time you go out to avoid nasty surprises.

A 3 strand braid is very simple. Tie 3 strands together, then braid left strand over middle, then right over middle, left over middle, right over middle etc. Snug them up as you go.

Thanks, all! Lots of suggestions I will be trying. I need to learn how to braid, seems a good way to do it.

Or, learn to reverse twistsome finer hemp thread. Looks nice and if you build a loop into the end, is very strong and neat.
