Hey guys! Hope your hunting season is going well! I got a problem With my Lott lock on my trade gun. It’s an older gun curly made in earlier in his career and has a Lott lock on it. Problem is I get about 4 shots from it before I have to knap my flint bc it provides little or no sparks if I don’t. A wonderful “khlack” sound is made while squirrel hunting... ha. Iv tried differed angles of positioning my flint, while some help they don’t really fix the problem. So I’m kinda at a loss for what to do now. I would like a Davis lock to drop in but I know finding one is about impossible right now. Any help to get me back in the woods is much appreciated! Thanks again!

My Pedersoli Lott lock on my gun was awful.
I first changed the cock angle.
Made a better cam shape.
Replaced the frizzen spring with something lighter and rehardend the frizzen.

Now I have a fast lock and better flint life but I still have to Knapp regular.

Hey thanks for the info! I tried to adjust the cock but couldn’t get it heated enough bc that metal sure is thick. If I can get a Davis Lock is it worth it? Or are these bigger lock just like that??

The Lott lock has a lot wrong with it. Weak mainspring. Often slow. Frizzen not hard or too hard. Sloppy internals. If you get a big Davis Colonial round faced lock the world will be a better place for you to live in.

I have about 8 locks in my parts bin by the 3 big makers and the Davis round faced Colonial throws the most sparks. No big lock is as fast as a smaller lock, but it’s fast enough.

I have a Pedersoli trade gun with a Lott lock. I'd suggest that you get the frizzen rehardened, and put a piece of standard wooden match stick under the the flint at the back where the flint touches the jaw screws. See if that doesn't help a bit. If it doesn't you might see about retro fitting a different lock.

Dennis Neely has helped me a lot to solve this problem, what a great guy check out his sight if you already haven’t but we talked on the phone for 2 hours about the Lott lock. He has a Davis for his trade gun but can’t part with the Lott since it’s original to his first build. So he has tinkered with it for the past 20 plus years ha. One thing that really helped was double wrapping (sideways) a strip of buckskin over the flint. This helps with a much tighter grip which has increased my flint life Tremendously. Now as loyalistdave suggested a match stick will greatly help bc I know my geometry of the cock is off so that is the next fix. Thanks again guys for all the info it has helped in this journey!

the match stick trick is pretty old, and works when the flint edge hits too square on the face of the frizzen, and sometimes when the frizzen spring is too tight. It's a quick fix for the very large locks, which seem to have a tendency to be "off" in a lot of cases.

OH and you need to be sure, especially if you use a leather wrap, that the butt of the flint on that Lott lock is naked against the jaw screw. IF you ever go larger, a la a musket lock on a musket..., go with a lead wrap with a gap to allow the back of the flint to touch the jaw screw. NEVER use lead on a rifle or smoothbore lock smaller than the LOTT.

Hardening the frizzen on my Lott helped a ton. Will try that matchstick trick as well!!
Wish someone would start making that Tryon lock for Davis again!!!
