Traditionally, rum was used...I never heard of tequila being use for grog....But then I was surprised to learn that cider was used in place of water... :hmm:
 
Just beware; it makes you see ”˜centerpeds and snakes’ gives you ”˜pains and aches’ wears out you clothing, and leaves you without a soo.
 
Not a big grog person. Friend did it using a 1 oz jigger and did equal amounts of rum. sugar syrup and lime juice. Seems to have been a way to stretch out the rum ration in the Royal Navy. The lime juice was obviously for scurvy. Seems like a waste of rum! :wink:
 
It's pretty close to shrub,,

Around here the common recipe is using commercial lemonade mix, make a gallon of lemonade, pour it in a larger bucket, add a quart of rum, slice an orange and squish each slice into the bucket and toss those in too.
Sweeten with sugar if ya want.
(hint) brown sugar makes people wonder what that extra flavor is
Do all that around noon, then drink it (chilled) after supper when the music starts.
I've always wanted to make olde schoole Ben Franklin Shrub,, but just I can't seem to wait a month.
 
Proper British Navy "grog" was
1 Gil (4 oz.) of 95-110 proof rum.
1 ounce lime juice
1 Gil or more of warm water*
sugar.

Some sources dilute the rum 50/50 which with the lime juice gives you 8 oz. of a 50 proof drink. Other sources specify that the mug (or can) would be filled with enough water to give a full can so you end up with 12 ounces of around 30 proof. The sailor still got the gill of the rum ration, but simply more liquid when downing it. How hot the water was when it was made and how warm the beverage when it got to the stomach of the sailor is anybody's guess, BUT if the water was boiled first it would be sanitary AND if pretty warm when it hit the rum some of the alcohol would be lost. :shocked2:

The lime juice was often mixed with the high proof rum in the barrel and traveled that way, so the rum probably started out at 110 proof but ended up about 80 proof when diluted with the juice. (the rum kept the juice from fermenting or spoiling on a sea voyage :wink:) Then it was made into grog by adding the water and some sugar (if available) when it was to be consumed.

Well first thing you need is water and the lime juice. Keep in mind the line is more lemons in eighteenth century English. Put water in a wood keg. Splash with a pail of salt water ever week for three months. Meanwhile keep your lime juice in a wooden barrel, on the top of the juice keep a layer of rancid lard or tallow. On service day mix your rum lime juice and slightly slimy water. Drink warm in a copper cup that’s been washed with salt water.

I have tried saying : we don need no stinking badges over and over till I get my accent down then try arrrrg, but Robert Newton keeps coming out :haha:
