I have a couple 1/5th scale ACW Cannons and would like to get more range time in. I have heard about and are trying to contact a local group that fires these scale cannons, but until I do make contact...... Any idea what the standard range distance is for these smooth bore, 69 caliber cannons? Thank you for your replies.

I have 3 sub scale cannon. Two are golf ball bore, 1.75, and a mortar that is 3 inch. I am very fortunate that my local sportsmans club allows me to fire there. For the most part, small arms backstops at 25 and 50 and 100 yards are fine, if you are careful. Having said that, I have tailored my loads to be safe at the range. Titleist style golf balls have the penchant for rebounding and ricocheting all over when shot:  I switched to steel balls, so the backstop would catch it. With my mortar, I scaled back the powder charge so as to land within the 200 yard line. (The range is 300 yards long) A concrete filled soup can, or a 3lb lead down rigger ball falling from the sky could present some problems if over shot ... :surrender: Most likely, .50 or .69 cannon will be shooting a cast ball of lead or wheel weights at pistol velocity. If you consider that you should be fine, Too high of elevation has to be controlled. Recoil controlled with appropriate breaching ropes is a good idea. Hope this helps...If you can locate a copy of "Round Shot and Rammers" it is good reading.

My son's golf ball cannon gets shot at his friends farm. They own the mountain behind App 1/4 to 1/2 mile from the back of the 800 yard by laser finder field.

Golf balls are gone period. Putting tagging tape on them they are last seen headed for the mountain past the end of the field.

We have seen bear can motors hit within 5 feet of the flag posts at 300 yards.

I shot my "beer can" bored mortar over the weekend. Beer cans full of concrete were the projectiloes. We were shooting at about maximum range, or about 450 yards at an old abandoned shack as a target. We were lucky if the rounds hit within 50 feet of it.

So we proved once again that the safest place to be on the range was right smack center in the middle of the bull's eye.
