This is a sweet walnut slab I found today to use as a wall mount/plaque for my rifle; I'm thinking of carving oak leaves around the border and use antler tips as hangers for the rifle and accouterments... Any suggestions on how I should style the display? Comments welcome!

I think you're onto a good plan, be sure to keep us posted. And don't forget the pics!

I like the idea of using Antler tines, from a buck that the rifle took, for the supports. Of course I'm sure you are going to have them under the trigger guard and under the ramrod so they don't dent the rifle stock.

Personally, I would shape the walnut board resembling an 18th to early 19th century outdoor Tavern or Tradesman's Sign, in keeping with the period of the rifle. Here is a link to some examples to give you an idea on what I am referring to.

I am no carver, myself, but I personally would not use Oak Leave carvings to decorate the board. I don't think I would carve the sign much at all, but if I did, may I suggest using Acanthus leave patterns that was extremely common for carving on flint rifles in the 18th century, as something that would "go more with" the period of the rifle? https://search.aol.com/aol/image?q=acanthus+leaves+patterns&s_chn=prt_bon&v_t=comsearch
