There is really nowhere that I have found locally to buy quality used, or new for that matter, traditional muzzleloaders. Does anyone have an online source with a good selection of traditional guns?

There are always some nice guns on the CLA site. Keep in mind that you are dealing with individual sellers there & not the CLA organization. Also check with Clay Smith gunsmith in Williamsburg - he both makes guns and sells on consignment. Track of the Wolf has already been mentioned - they do a good job with photos of the guns they have for sale.

I would visit various websites that offer MLers for sale but some charge pretty steep fees. TOW has a 33% add on but is a reputable gun broker and sells a whole lot of MLers through their consignment sales. Have sold 4 LRs through them and both I and the buyers were satisfied.

I've sold many LRs through CLA and haven't had any returns and the prices are more reasonable dealing directly w/ the builder or owner. This org. would be my first choice for buying a MLer.

In this day and age, one should be wary when buying anything, but MLer gun builders and owners are an honest lot and all my guns are sold w/ a 10 day, non fire unconditional return policy and many builders and owners have some form of this.

I no longer build MLers for sale.

Be patient and you'll find a quality MLer.......Fred

At any one time, Dixon's Muzzle loaders has a dozen or more for sale. They ain't cheap. Not the ones on the rack, but the ones hanging on the ceiling. Many of the guns up there are not for sale, but it seems there are always some nice ones that are.

I recently bought a used muzzleloader from the Log Cabin Shop. They shipped it out the same day and I had it three days later (Ohio to Oregon).

fort chambers in chambersburg pa. they are the second largest muzzleloading shop in pa. check out their web site.
I have done well on the auction sites.

Join a B\P shooting club.

Over the years I have acquired several very nice custom flintlock rifles from word of mouth club members and from members themselves.

It is also a good place to handle and shoot the gun before you lay your money down.

I have had good luck with eBay, this site's classified ads and every once and awhile the local pawn shops.

A friend of mine has had great luck with estate sales.

For online purchases, take your time, scrutinize pictures and ask questions.

A lot of folks who sell off a gun are clueless about the gun. The family finds an old gun in a mans stuff after he passes away and they assume the dusty old fashioned gun with the scratches on the stock is likely of no value unless it is a Revolution style long rifle. Then they get to thinking it is a real deal...those folks make me sad for them. They think it is worth much more than it is. But it is not a war relic at all. It is grandpa's take on a build of a Lancaster he made 40 years ago. Hard telling them that they do have a valuable gun, but it is worth a fraction of what they thought.

Back on topic:
Use many sources, go into stores, go to estate sales, look online and ask around.
