Hi,
Three 62 caliber guns (2 rifles and 1 smoothie in the middle) all dirty and dialed in at 50 and 100 yds. Even the smoothie consistently hits within the scoring area at 100.

That first one has a lot of drop in the stock . . all are beautiful .. what styles or makes are they ?

Hi,
Thanks for looking. The first one is an English sporting rifle I built representing a London-made gun from about 1750. It does have a lot of drop but fits me like a glove for offhand shooting. The second is an 1770 English fowler I built for a woman. I will deliver it to her at Dixon's gunmakers fair. The third is a Rev War period longrifle that might have been made near Bethlehem, PA. It closely follows the lines of an original rifle (#52) shown in Shumway's first volume of Rifles in Colonial America.

Very Nice Dave,,They look great together!

To get hunting sized groups out to 100 yards...
how much powder was required?

Thanks Dave..I just gotta know

I'm shooting a Rice rr 1-70 58 cal it likes 110 gr 2f goex.
1575 at muzzle 1150 at poi@ 85 yards

Thought if I caught you at happy hour I might get a bite.

Hi 22Fowl,
Thanks for the note. The English rifle on top with Rice barrel and round-bottomed grooves likes 75 grs of 2FF with 0.610 ball and 0.020" patching lubed with a solution of 1 part Ballistol and 6 parts water. That is my target load at 50 and 100 yards. It means dead on hold at 100 yds and 6 o'clock hold at 50. It may do as well with even less powder. It again shoots tight groups at 95gr 2FF with the same ball and patch. The gun is light and beyond 100gr the recoil gets pretty strong and the extra powder is not needed. The long rifle on bottom has a Getz barrel with square grooves. It likes 65gr of 2FF, 0.610 cal ball, and 0.023" patches lubed as above. It needs a very tight ball and patch combination using a thick patch. That is the target load. It also does well at 50 and 100 yards with 90 grs of 2FF with the same ball and patch. With 90 grs of powder there is not much difference in hold between 50 and 100 yrds. With 65 grs, the difference is the same as for the English rifle. The photo below shows results for the English rifle at 50 yards as I increased powder from 65 to 75 grs and adjusted sights. The numbered groups are from the rifle, the others are from a fowler I was test firing before the rifle. The last group (#4) is 5 shots from a bench and 3 offhand.

It has been a hot hot summer and mostly after work I have been scrambling to get any chores done and flop down under the swamp cooler with a book. But threads like this make a guy want to shoot even if it means sunburn and my shirt sticking to me.

Thank You Dave..

Looks like you got good barrels too!

Really enjoy finding the the happy loads!

Keep those buid pictures coming..we appreciate them..
