That is a very nice double barrel pistol. I especially appreciate the swell at the bottom of the grip to hold onto it better.
Like Feltwad, I was thinking of a Howdah pistol, plus with a 16 bore, this would take the British Service .66 cal. "Carbine" ammunition.

And here I thought a Howdah pistol was named for the riding platform on an Indian Elephant to keep tigers from getting in. It may have been owned by an officer but that is why it is called a Howdah gun. nothing to do with war but I may be wrong.

The Howdah is the basket on the elephant where the Tiger hunter rides. The double barrel pistol was named after the Howdah and it was used as a backup tiger stopper when the tiger came for the hunter.
This is an original Howdah made in England in .69cal smooth bore. It has a compartment in the butt for extra caps.

Yeah...and I assume a Howdah beats a fireplace poker, or whatever that guy had! :shocked2: :youcrazy: Surprised the elephant didn't buck with a tiger jumping up right in his face.

Sometimes in a very stressful situation, such as a mad tiger suddenly appearing out of seeming nowhere, shock at what is happening delays any reaction. I have no idea how I would have reacted but new pants would likely have been required.
