The "Manual of 19th century Land Warfare" mentions Air beds made of leather, inflated with a bellows....popular among officers on campaign...in the early 19th century

 ...Who knew! :shocked2:

Didn't early air beds preceed bagpipes?

Cool..., but...,

I will stick with my cloth ticking mattress cover, stuffed with straw when I get to the event. Light, packs up small, and I don't pass out from working a bellows to fill it. :shocked2:

I know, RIGHT?

Plus the fact that apparently a modern, factory air mattress has a max payload of 300 lbs. Because no matter how hard I try to find the leak, it's never there BUT when I've used one in the past..., I ALWAYS wake up with my butt and shoulders on the cold ground. :shake:

I had an air mattress leak the first time out of the box (unopened and recently purchased). I don't trust them....

When I was motorcycling and camping, I had a moderately high dollar air mattress that held air quite well. I found it very comfortable when sleeping on the floor of my small dome tent. But, them days is behind me and now I have to have a cot. My old knees won't let me get up off the ground once I get down there. The air mattress deflated into a small package when folded up and was easy to carry on my motorcycle. If I had something larger to travel in, I would have chosen a foam mattress. They are quite comfortable but if you are worried about being HC, they won't do but if you are satisfied just looking HC, an air or foam mattress is not difficult to disguise. When I was doing Civil War reenacting, we often were supplied with bales of straw to put in the bottom of our tents to sleep on but if hay wasn't available, once it got dark, I pulled my foam mattress out of my car and tossed it in the tent to sleep on. I had it disguised quite well so that it just looked like straw, grass or something stuffed in a blanket. I thoroughly enjoyed reenacting but there were times when I had to draw the line at strict HC. I had my limits and sleeping on the hard ground in just a blanket was one of them.

I know many of y'all will disagree with me on this issue preferring to do everything just as they did back in the day. Sleeping on the hard ground in just a blanket is all part of the fun for y'all with maybe a nice small rock or pine cone under your bedroll for authenticity. That's okay for you and welcome to it but 'twern't for me. Next time that rock, twig or pine cone is jabbing you in the ribs as you try to sleep, think of my mattress hidden under my blankets and me resting peacefully in the arms of Morpheous.....Ahhhhh!!! BTW, Morpheous is not one of the syphiletic camp followers :haha:

Personally, I blame global warming. Yes, I know that some don't believe in it but why else would the ground be so much harder than it was 30 years ago?

Global warming might explain why it always rains at rendezvous..... :hmm:

When I was in grad school long ago, the same crowd of "Henny Penny" scientists were saying that there was an ICE AGE coming within 10 years & that we "just have to" spend TRILLIONS of dollars to deal with the "coming ice age".
(Did I sleep through the "ice age" that the "Global Cooling fanatics/loons" were "so very sure of" & warned us against in the 1980s??)

Frankly, given the large amount of outright LIES, "wild guesses" & knowing silliness of "the global warming crowd" I'm very dubious of their "trusted scientific data".
(Fwiw, there are NO "drowning polar bears" nor is there any "hard data" to PROVE many of the other wilder claims made by the "consensus of experts".)

I suspect that the ground is getting harder only because I'm now 70YO, instead of 25YO. - Fyi, my bones DO ache in the mornings.

just my OPINIONS, satx

You appear to be mistaking the politician-speak for the actual facts/evidence/data that support global warming. I wouldn't believe a word the politicians say either - they couldn't identify good data if it crawled up in their lap and kissed their neck. The reputable scientists, on the other hand, actually know what they are talking about...

How does a layman like me (My academic training is in social sciences & the humanities, rather than the natural sciences.) KNOW which people are "reputable scientists"?? = EVERY one of the "global warming loons & frauds" stoutly CLAIMS to be "reputable".
(Some of Al Gore's cohort of "noted scientists" admitted in a court deposition 2 years ago that they had simply "created" much of what they claimed to be "documented facts". = The "scientists" reportedly HAD to make that admission of utter dishonesty or face jail for attempting to defraud a major non-profit foundation, which they were seeking grants-in-aid from.)

yours, satx
