It's my sad duty to report the passing of long time muzzle loading shooter Charley Eckhardt who passed away this morning form liver related complications. Charley was known around Texas as a long time muzzle loading shooter and noted history author of Texas and western history. His books (published under C.F. Eckhardt), newspaper columns and magazine articles are virtually legendary in this area. It was my great pleasure to have illustrated his final book, "Texas Smoke", a history of muzzle loading firearms in Texas from the coming of the Spanish in the early 16th century till the beginning of the U.S. Civil War. He was a consummate story teller and will be greatly missed. Adios old friend. Vaya con Dios!

Didn't know him ,, however your posting reads like he is worthy of being the Lead Scout..He just gets to Point a la Barbe first,,in due time we'll all get there,, form up,fire a Flee de joie and head in to the Fort,,

Sounds like someone I would have enjoyed knowing.

Sorry for your loss. We are all diminished when such a man dies.

I see his books are available on ebay at a very reasonable price.

Charley had a wonderful ability to story-tell. I might question a spot or two of his facts but never his way of telling the story. He met and knew many of the old timers of our history here. You can see some of his writing by checking out Charley Eckhardt's Texas.

Thank you, Wes/Tex. I just got back here, and spent much of the last hour checking out "Charley Eckhardt's Texas", and there's a lot of good readin' there.

(An aside to others: Just type it into your search engine, and you will find a lot of Charley's old newspaper columns there for your reading pleasure. Worth the trip.)

I will bookmark it in My Favorites. A good man left us...but he has left us with a lot of good memories and stories to be shared.

Thank you sir, I lost a right arm when he passed over. Those articles will give anyone a good feel for his story-teller style of writing and his ability to spin a yarn. The books are fleshed out newspaper articles or a few he'd never written up for the local paper. Anyone with an interest in Texas and western history should enjoy his work!
