.45cal 2X PRB Field Test gets Doe for needy family

The Field test of the .45cal “loaded-for Bear” (two patched lead balls) that we understand the Settlers did from time to time worked perfectly as expected on a Doe this afternoon.
The load development back in the summer had the pair of patched balls making a small oval at 25yds, and a figure-8 at 50yds.

At 5:00pm a couple Does stepped out of the dense overgrown clear cut about 25yds down the logger’s road on my left side and crossed it, going on into the more open oak flat in front of me.
They were on a left to right heading that would cross in front of me quartering up and away at a 45* angle and when she got into the clear at what turned out to be 35yds, I whistled and they stopped.
I slipped the double patched round balls in at the rear most rib on the right side so they’d drive forward through the heart”¦she bolted and piled up 20yds away.

.45cal Early Virginia Flintlock, 90grns Goex 2F, two Hornady .440” patched lead balls.

No PRB recovery...I give them away 'as is'...haven't opened one up in 10-15 years...but I've recovered enough lead balls to suspect they flattened pretty well as they didn't exit the front chest.

Goex 2F makes loads seem like powder-puffs, recoil isn't anything abnormal.

Yes, they need and appreciate getting some meat.

Hopefully you'll take this question in the "right light"....why don't you like venison? I've been a meat hunter all of my hunting days and somehow can't reconcile "shooting for sport" vs hunting for meat....or both. Nothing personal....just wondering.....Fred

Congratulations on a successful hunt. I was wondering if you had two exit holes or did you have a complete pass through at all? I to have experimented with a double ball load and have had success with it. :hatsoff:

No...they were still under a good head of steam at only 35yds and with the quartering away shot, traveling forward from the right rearmost rib to the heart, they'd already flattened some by the time they hit it...no exit from the chest wall
