Recently I cast a bunch of Lee R.E.A.L. bullets for my .50 cal. Usually, I have been lubing them up with TC bore butter as I have a large amount on hand. However, this gets really messy so that I usually do it right before shooting at the range and of coarse the borebutter gets all over everything. Does anyone have a homemade recipe for a bullet lube which more resembles the commercial stuff that comes on prelubed bullets like a TC Maxihunter? Also, what is a good way to get them lubed with out making a huge mess?

T/C used to sell a luber that screwed onto their tube of lube and you placed a conical into it, not sure how well it worked as I never used one. Not sure if they still carry them or not.

I have one of those, they don't work very well in my experience. Plus, they still use the wonderlube.

Lee REAL's are tough to lube with Bore Butter or other paste type lubes. The best way I have found is to mix a lube of beeswax and olive oil so it has a stiff consistency. I put the bullets in a shallow flat pan and pour melted lube in until the grooves are submerged. Let the lube cool and cut the bullets out with a tube of proper dimension. I used a speedloader tube.

I lube mine with Lee Liquid Alox now. You tumble them in the lube to coat them well and let them dry. It leaves a varnish like coating on the bullet which cuts down on leading of the barrel. To keep fouling soft and to act as a gas check I use a well lubed felt wad between the bullet and powder. I get much better accuracy out of alox lubed REAL's than from Bore Butter lubed.

You might try a 50/50 mix of castor oil and beeswax. I have limited experience with it but it's not as messy as Stumpy's Moose Snot and you can play with the mixture. The batch I made was probably more like 60/40 with more beeswax. GW

Bullet lube: 1 lb. beeswax 1 lb. Crisco Melt in the microwave and combine the two. Pan lube your bullets.

I now use SPG bullet lube on all my conicals & Minies. You can buy the SPG in bricks of various sizes, which is a cheaper way than buying it in sticks. I used to use a homemade mix of 50/50 Beeswax & Petroleum Jelly, worked just fine, just like the convenience of SPG.....one less thing to make!
I too would recommend that you pan lube your bullets. I melt the lube & pour it to the desired height while the bullets are sitting in a pan. I don't bother with a cookie cutter to remove the bullets, the bullets & lube will drop out of the pan (once the lube has cooled) with just a little help & then I just push the bullets out of the lube with my thumb. No mess & very little bother.

Lee Liquid Alox works like a charm. Easy to apply, a couple of seconds in the microwave to soften, pour onto bullets in a plastic bag, move around & drop out on wax paper. Also not messy to carry around.
