I have consulted my catalogue from the Royal Armouries of London. I have narrowed the style of pistole down to three. Also taking measuring tape and calculater to determine the scale of the pictures I determined that the locks on pistoles were all between 5 and six inches. So I made the plate five and three eighths. I let the wheel that I already have determine the height and flow of the curves.

I might get a little more done this week. But then my grand nephew is coming for two weeks and I may not get much done. Then there is Labor Day weekend and I will be off to the Rifle Frolic. Lord Willing.

That looks good, volatpluvia .
Are there any little surprises waiting for us :hmm:
:hatsoff:

Thanks guys,
I bought the barrel at Christmas time at Dixon's Muzzleloader Shop. It jumped into my hands and demanded I take it home. I tried several times to put it down but it would not let go. My best friend, Jeff, who was in from Arizona, was no help. He told me I deserved to have it. So here we are.

UT, I am interested in just what kind of surprizes you have in mind. Give me a hint.

:hmm: Double-barrel Wheellock :shocked2:
or a special stock :hmm:
:hatsoff:

Dave,
Welcome to the forum. Glad you like it. It will be a very large pistole. That being a 12 inch long 11 gauge smoothbore barrel. I'll have to keep the powder charge down or I'll be wearing it on my forhead.

Undertaker,
Only one barrel. I have taken photos of four possible stock styles, minus the decorations, or at least most of them. I will post them tomorrow.
You're opinion will be valued, even if not followed.

12" barrel and 11 gauge. :shocked2:
Yip, that's enough.
Now i'm waiting to see the stocks.

Undertaker,
Very pretty! Way out of my league.
In immediate answer to your anticipation. Here are the stock styles I am looking at. Go to your copy of the Wheellock Firearms of the Royal Armouries and look at page 44, French circa 1600.
page 46, French circa 1615, this is the one I am currently thinking of the most. Page 54, Dutch circa 1640, my second choice. Page 56, German circa 1640.
Your opinion will be valued, no matter which I do.

My personal favorite of those four is the German Sporting Rifle on Page 56. Then again, I've always had a thing for the long guns.

Oh.....Well, my personal taste is towards the Page 57 Wheellock only because I have have a personal like of the plain, munitions quality arms. Plain, yet still elegant. :hmm:

Well,
I finally got back to this lock this week. Here is a picture of the bridle attached. I know I have to get some better screws. All things in good time. I need to think carefully about making an axle for this one because I want it to be more traditional.

I will revisit this thread.

Great work.

I tried to find screws suitable to use as stock - ie big heads to reshape and long partially unthreaded shanks. No luck so far. Looks like turning them will be required.

Okay, it took a while. I purchased some three quarter inch round stock and dove in to making the axle. Now bear in mind that I do not have a turning lathe. So this is what one has to do to work by hand. I used a pencil placed alongside a straight square blade and drew a round circle on the end of the rod one eighth in from the outside. Then I hacksawed four sides down and filed the corners until I had an octagon. Then, once I had determined that it was no more than a few thousandths off center, I filed it basically round and then started on the other end. I will chuck up the round end in the drill press and use a file to carefully true up the octagon end with the round end. Then I will reverse and true up the basically round end. Whether the middle is true with the ends is irrelevant, most of it gets removed anyway. It will be the cam to push the pan cover toggle out of the way and open the pan. And I will be milling(with drill and cutter) out the other side of the cam to attach the upper end of the chain. I begin to see just how much the axle/spindle is the heart of the wheellock.
