I have a Navy Arms 58 cal Zoli Zouave. I tried to remove the rear sight but could not. There is a retaining disc with 2 holes. I fitted the tips of a pair of small needle nose pliers into the holds and the disc rotated 1/2 a turn and stopped. How do I remove the sight? Thanks.

Keep turning that disk, if will unscrew and though it's been a while I recall it as a normal right hand thread.

After I get the screw out I cut a screwdriver
slot in it with a hacksaw and don't have to
worry about having a longnosed pliers handy.

Unfortunately after a 1/2 turn the disc binds. If I add any more force, my pliers will break. I guess I will need to fabricate a tool?

Use some good penetrating oil and keep twisting back and forth and note whether you are making headway. It'll come out

I have one of those "spanners" but while they work fine for original Springfield sight screws they usually don't fit the 2 holes in the imports. You can buy adjustable pin spnners from jewlery supply houses but they may be expensive. Try patience and plenty of PB Blaster. Let it soak and work the screw back and forth easy. Once the screw is out the sight should tip out toward the breech. The rear of the sight notch is a dovetail and the front is just a 90 degree cut.

You can try making your own spanner to fit the screw. Use a cheap flat-blade screwdriver, anneal the tip, and file or grind it back to leave a couple of stub "pins" to fit the hole spacing and diameter on your sight screw. Shouldn't take more than 20 minutes or so, if that. Reharden the tip if you wish, and then you will have a tool that should last longer than you have the musket.

Good luck and let us know how you progress.
