Nope, I hate to say it but in the case of this Bess it is not possible
Now if I re-stock the Bess sure, you can make it however you want.

Just to clarify, we are not talking about removing the barrel to lower the channel. We are saying the barrel needs to come out so the top half of the upper and lower fore stock can be worked down properly.

I am not sure why you would need to remove the barrel.
The Barrel is sitting in the channel at the correct depth.Acording to the photos posted of the real thing.Slabing the fore stock or
Makeing the fore stock thin, is not a problem
And that is now done
Turning the wood into the barrel at the top is just alot of hand sanding.
I am telling you guys, I did What you wanted
You all were right
It looks so much better
A smaller ,Thinner Sleeker .Indian Bess
I got to get back to work
I want to go shoot it again tommorow

Yes, to properly shape the sides of the top of the barrel channel, the barrel needs to come out. At least it would make it a lot easier, not to mention faster if you are looking for speed, and allow you to avoid scratching the sides of the barrel. Remember B.D. you will not want a flat surface on top of the stock along the barrel channel, it should curve in toward the barrel, almost but not quite sharp.

Did you ever buy the Buchele book I suggested? Or the Dixon?

I know ....Its already done
My friend in Texas owns a second model
I shot it back in 2006
Talked to him last night, about the top of the fore stock along the length of the barrel.
It is around 3/16ths thick at the breach flat and tappers down to the barrel just in front of the entry pipe to no flat at all .
Nothing is easy for me
But all said and done
I am glad I did it!
All toll, around 10 hours for the conversion.
Not including the finish of the stock.
It now ,has a look, very passable, and very close to the original pictures provided to me.
And the hands on look {via:cell phone} at an original

The finish work is something that takes alot of time with me

YES I KNOW ...MORE SANDING
The R/R is glued together getin a new one from TOTW
Well it was a job,
The whole of the R/R channel had to be removed and then re-cut .
I will now rate the V/A 1st model.
It is an assembled kit with way to much wood
Good barrel and proper furniture
A lock that sparks like no tomorrow
And all hand made
I think my time for the conversion is now at around 12 hours and maybe $20.00 worth of supplies
I like it. I really like it
It looks the part and soon I will to
Thanks for all the support
When she goes to the woods
The camera will go with us
I will up date photos as I complete the finish work
