People have toasted them over a flame.
I like to sand white then twist masking tape around around it. Stain it with an ebony wood stain. Remove the tape then oil the whole.
 
I've used plastic electrical tape to create the mask and Birchwood Casey alcohol based Walnut stain to form the stripes. No flames or wood burning needed.
 
I’ve used a candle in the past. Would tape the width of the stripe prior to a very light burning.

The candle is stationary. Moving just the rod to acquire a controlled discoloration to your satisfaction.

Lastly, a coat of a light stain of your choosing followed by a sealant. I personally use Tru-Oil hand rubbed to the desired sheen.
