I picked up an Whitney 1841 Mississippi awhile back. It was made in 1851 and has a 58 cal barrel but it appears to be a smoothbore. I know they bored out the 54 cal guns to 58 cal for the minie ball, but I thought they rifled them at that time. I put a borescope down it and there is no hint of rifling. Is this normal?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Mike

If it's smoothbore it was done after government service. Usually when that was done they were cut down too, stock shortened, sights removed, possibly barrel shortened too. Is yours in original configuration other than the bore?
